Florida Certified Educator for Elementary to High School

I have a collaborative style of teaching. My ultimate goal is to get students to think, regardless of their age. With younger students, I tend to be much more directive so that we accomplish intended learning. With middle and high school students, I ask "Why" and "How do you know" quite often so that they learn to provide evidence for their thinking. Getting the RIGHT answer isn't the goal -- understanding and developing critical thinking processes are much more valuable!

I have been working with children for several years. I started by teaching dance at a local dance studio while I was in high school. It was from this experience that I chose to go to college to become a teacher. I have a degree in Elementary Education and am ESOL certified. I have experience as a substitute teacher and have worked with both elementary and middle school students.

I have been told by my first year teaching mentor that my style of teaching is "unconventional". Although I majored in English, I had a concentration in creative writing and a minor in visual arts. I think of writing as an art, and so I use creative methods in the classroom to teach students. A Little Bit About Me...

I love working with children and young adults. As a Music major, I have been giving singing, piano, and theory and sight singing lessons for many years. There is nothing more rewarding that watching a child learn and knowing that you helped him/ her get there. I do not use common classroom practices in teaching. Activity and creativity are at the heart of learning. When learning is fun, children will retain concepts and not constantly ask, "Why am I learning this?" I try to create a practical way to use concepts learned in school. Here are a few examples. For a twelve year old boy studying geometry, we might play basket ball to calculate the best angles for a free-throw. For a nine year old girl, I might teach her to do a handstand to learn about simple machines and science. Learning is fun...if you know how to play.
