While a vicar (pastoral intern) at Zion Lutheran Church in Beecher, IL, I was the default substitute teacher, so that when any of the teachers in their K-8 school were absent I was called upon to teach, most often for a day. In one case I taught the 3rd and 4th grade class for 6 days while the regular teacher was out and really enjoyed the experience. (I recall having to teach every class at least once -- even kindergarten!) After graduating from the seminary, it was part of my task as a pastor to teach a class in Christian doctrine to 7th and 8th grade students in preparation for their confirmation, as well as adult Bible classes and/or other classes as needed.
