I'm Here to Help!!!

I have often thought about becoming a teacher and have been told by friends, families and previous instructors in my own learning I would make a good one but I feel my personality would be better served in a more laid back and less rigid atmosphere. I am very laid back, amiable and have a strong passion for what I've learned and what I do (the whole aspiring writer thing I mentioned earlier).
I am a twenty eighty year old graduate of the University at Albany where I received my Bachelors in English Lit. in 2011. I have no previous teaching or tutoring experience but that does not mean I lack the knowledge or skill necessary to help one learn and grow. I am an avid reader and aspiring writer and try to put thought to paper every day.

English Language Arts Teacher

I believe that real learning takes place when students are actively engaged in the material. Finding the right materials to teach with will often inspire intrinsic motivation.
I have currently spent over 350 hours in a variety of school settings. From private school to public, first grade to twelfth, I have seen it all. The majority of my experience has taken place in a suburban middle school, however I have also spent a reasonable ammount of time working with inner city high school students. I double majored in college to recieve a bachelors degree in literature and writing, and spent a full year interning at a student run newspaper as a journalist and copy editor. I have tutored middle school students with a variety of learning disabilities, as well as SAT prep for high school students. I am currently registered for a series of NYS tests to earn my certification to teach.

Certified Public Librarian

After six years of social work experience as a caseworker for Westchester County Department of Social Services where I worked extensively with families and children with special needs, I returned to college to receive my Master's degree in Library and Information Science. In 1978 I started my librarian career at the New York State Library, as a reference librarian specializing in the humanities, social sciences and legal research. I soon became coordinator of staff training (for a staff of over 200), both organizing and teaching classes in many subjects, and was liason with the New York State Data Center and Census Bureau. My interest and love of teaching and working with people led to having responsibility for overseeing the SUNY internship program, providing guidance and training to students. I also had a role as Chair of numerous committees, including disability awareness and ergonomi ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I hold an English degree from a program that largely overlapped with Education - basically, I have studied teaching as a student at college. On the other end of the spectrum, I have been a substitute educator for Capital Region BOCES for 3 years, working with teaching professionals on short-term assignments. Through this experience I believe I have gathered a good deal of craft in the area of special-needs learning.
I think it is more important to understand the student than to understand the material. Don't get me wrong - as a teacher I always re-educate myself to the material if need be - but I feel my real strength as an educator lies in finding a new way to teach the same concept. If a student is failing to learn, it is less often the material itself and more often the way it is being presented. Finding a new way is something I have practiced in school and at BOCES, and is my g ... read more

I love tutoring and working with children to young adults. The internet provides a lot of information but the joy of going to the library to discover new worlds, knowledge or just for the fun of it is still a worthwhile venture. I have tutored students who truly abhored reading but when we read about New York City and took them to the places of interest we studied and it truly got them excited about the next book. My methods are varied but consistent. I teach outdoors weather permitting on field trips and with themes to keep the child interested and wanting to read and learn.
As a mother of 16 yr old twins, I have always been a tutor in reading, english and literature. I got my degree in English/Art/Art Therapy/Literature as a result of my love for the written word and regarding books as our passport to the world around us near and far. I have obtained my Master's Degree in Philosophy and Critical Thought from the French University "Paris VIII". My primary experience has been in politics and philosophy, and has contained, as non-academic experience, involvement in small political groups dealing with specific issues affecting society at large. Learning philosophy has meant a strong knowledge of the English as well as French languages, including a strong background in European history dealing primarily with the period slightly before the French Revolution in France up to the present day, including spots of history in Europe previous to 1775.
I am very open and affable. I have a strong sense of humor and am in no case a hard disciplinarian. What's important is that I believe in sharing knowledge with as many people as is possible. I believe that knowledge belongs to everyone who seeks it. And I believe anyone i ... read more

I have always had a strong passion for learning, and nothing blesses me more in a classroom than seeing a student's eyes light up when the proverbial light bulb flashes on. My goal is to encourage a student to move from drudgery to delight in the learning process, and to instill confidence in his or her ability to grasp challenging concepts. To achieve these goals, I employ diligence and focus on the subject matter balanced with creativity and humor where appropriate.
My teaching experience includes English/language arts at the high school level in a suburban district, middle school in an urban district, private school and community college as an adjunct instructor. After having subsequently pursued an alternative career in financial services, I am currently operating as a sole proprietor and have continued my classroom instruction experience for the last three years teahing Englis ... read more

More About This Tutor...

While in pursuit of my Masters degree, I was a writing tutor at the university's Writing Center. In this position, I worked with both undergraduate and graduate students. Upon graduation, I worked for the Institute of Reading Development where I worked with students (ages ranging from 4-years to adult) to help improve comprehension, absorption, and phonetic awareness.
I am a strong believer in the fact that all students learn in different ways and at their own pace. I am very empathetic and patient with my students. I like to consider myself "firm, yet fair" when the need may arise. One of the most gratifying experiences for me is seeing my student finally "get it"; that look of accomplishment on their face after the fact is payment in and of itself.

I am currently working on my masters degree in Childhood Education 1-6 and Literacy at Sage College. In the past, I have done private tutoring in English Language Arts and Social Studies. I have also worked as an assistant teacher at a pre-school and have done some substitute teacher at the elementary level.
I enjoy working with children and watching them learn. I am a very understanding and non-judgemental person and I understand that everyone learns in different ways, and am a big believer in Howard Gardener's theory of multiple intelligences. I enjoy reading myself, and think I am able to instill my love of books in other people.

I am a student-centered, 21st Century skill thinking educator, who draws on a wealth of experience from within teaching as well as the outside world of communication. I seek to help students appreciate the place of English Language Arts in their lives, currently, and for the future, be that a love of reading, a delight in writing, or success in comprehension and analysis of texts. I have always wanted to be a teacher, specifically to teach reading. I have tutored throughout high school, participated in the tutor reading program through Big Brothers Big Sisters in Schenectady, and I am just completing my first early literacy class at Saint Rose. I am almost halfway through my Masters in the art of teaching program and should be student teaching within the next year. I have excellent paper writing skills, as I was an English major, and can do both MLA and APA style formatting. I have tutored high school students as well as elementary students. This past semester I have been focusing on reading observation for beginning level readers.
I believe that all children are capable of learning. As an educator, I have a very hands on attitude. Young children should be allowed to explore learning through all different forms. Children should move, touch, talk, listen, bu ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I'm a 1994 graduate of Fordham University in New York City, a published non-fiction freelance writer, and recently finished my Master's degree in a dual-degree program in English and Education at the State University of New York at New Paltz. I was a tutor to both undergraduate and MBA students at SUNY New Paltz. I am originally from Albany, NY and have taught at a private girls college-prepatory school and was an adjunct English Instructor at Maria College. I enjoy tutoring students from grade six through twelve, particularly in all aspects of academic writing.
I believe that every student has his or her own way of learning and therefore, I strive to get to know my students on a personal level so that I can help build upon their strengths and work with them to improve and not be intimidated by their weaknesses. I enjoy relating popular culture (music, movies, television) into writ ... read more
