A Little Bit About Me...

I started teaching chess at an elementary school in 2002, and continued there until 2006. While there I gained an appreciation for the power and joy of working with youth. I graduated in 2007 with a BS in Mathematics Education, and I have been teaching in the classroom for the last two years. While in college I began tutoring mathematics, and I have now been tutoring for the last six years - I have enjoyed every moment of it!
I believe all students can learn mathematics. I graduated from the University of Utah with a double-major in math (with an emphasis in statistics) and economics, and a minor in international studies. This fall I will begin a master’s program in International Comparative Education (educational development in third world countries) at Stanford University. I have been giving private lessons in math for over six years and have had over 60 pupils thus far. A Little Bit About Me...

I have previously been a tutor for private individuals while I was making my way through college, and also as a professional duty while I was employed by the Salt Lake City Public Library, where I worked for six years. I have not been a tutor for a few years, although I currently volunteer with the International Rescue Committee in Salt Lake by assisting program workers teach english speaking and reading skills to new refugee immigrant women.
I love teaching, but to students about 12 and older. I am able to relate and connect well with them, and let them learn and take pride in their progress. Especially with younger kids, a high degree of focus on my part can be necessary to keep them on task, but I find that one can be firm with them and not need to be patronizing or forceful.

I've never met a "stupid" student. I see all people as capable, as long as they are willing. I find it easy to get a student interested in a subject when they have usually been bored in class. I easily create metaphors and practical examples for application of the subject at hand so the student can personalize their studies.
