Love Teaching

Have a secondary education degree from Jacksonville State University. I have tutored before and have had several substitute jobs. I believe in letting the student teach sometimes by being an active participant in the learning experience. I think students do better when they can see the material, read the material, and explain the material because it makes them retain the information.

Possession is 9/10 of the law.. Description is 9/10 of saw.

I have been writing for my whole life, and have a love of the art that is description. Since Mich of humanity's understanding is based on metaphor, description and its subtleties is a key part of any writing process, be it creative or instructional. My favorite form of writing is creative, however I also enjoy writing essays and other pieces based on fact. No matter what form of writing you endeavor to do, getting your point across through description is paramount. I have placed and won poetry contests, and have written many essays of undergraduate and graduate levels.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have spent most of my life in an academic environment. I thrive on success- not only my own, but also the success of others around me. I became a substitute teacher in order to gain experience as a classroom leader. Tutoring is a necessary duty of an educator. I believe a one on one environment is conducive to learning and retaining information; being able to receive direct feedback from an educator is one of the most valuable assets to a young learner.

I would say my teaching style is more relaxed. I believe this helps one see students weaknesses and strengths better. It also allows one to compare the overall effect of teaching for each student. When I see a student falling behind then thats when I take action and try top get them where they should be in that area.
My experience is one that has taken me many different places to meet many diffrent people. I have always had a gift of helping others and conveying to them my knowledge. I enjoy helping children discover new areas, encouraging them to move way from the trite and trivial to new and daring concepts in their research. Often a trivial fact that they never knew will open the doors to opportunities they never envisioned. My son has many interests, and I have always encouraged him to explore them beyond the basics - he can now engage in some amazing discussions with my father, a former Army Ranger, about events in Vietnam that I know were never taught in my history classes. I say that because that is what I believe is my goal in teaching - let the child explore on their own, but be their to catch them when they fall. My duty is to be their guide on the journey; theirs is to show me the uncharted path.

Young children learn best through things that have meaning to them. For example, I once tutored a child that had difficulty learning his multiplication tables, but was an avid NASCAR fan. I taught him the sums of multiplication problems by using the numbers on the drivers cars. He learned that the sum of 6x4, and 4x6 was equal to Jeff Gordon's number, which was 24. We did that with every car in NASCAR and people were amazed at how quickly he learned his multiplication tables. Multiplication tables became a breeze to him. I have used similar principals teaching phonics, and reading to young children. I also, have a history of being patient and understanding with elementary aged children.
My love for children and wanting to make a difference in their lives, led me to get my Masters degree in Early Childhood Education. I believe that learning can make a difference in one's quality of ... read more

I enjoy working with students of all ages, although most of my experience has been with middle school age and older. I use a couple of different techniques to help students understand math, including using visual aides, problem solving techniques, role reversal (where they explain a lesson to me), blackboard/whiteboard work, and games. I believe it's really the responsibility of the tutor to understand the student's learning style and adjust the teaching to fit the learning style.
I have tutored students in math and science (mainly math) for over 13 years. I have helped students in various levels of mathematics - basic math, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and pre-calculus.
