Math, Science, Writing, and Critical Thinking

During my time at Colorado College, I worked as a chemistry tutor helping my younger peers traverse the challenging General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry course loads. But because of CC's rigorous alternative schedule--where you take one class at a time, for one month each class--it's necessary to learn to pick up new concepts very quickly, I often found myself being asked for help in classes I myself was taking. I never minded this, because being forced to explain something is the best way to ensure your own understanding of the concept. It wasn't long before math was my favorite class and I changed my major. When I was in school I helped a lot of my classmates with calculus. My approach to both physics and math is very concept oriented. I try to combat the 'shut up and calculate' approach that students often encounter in their schooling. Rather than expecting my students to quickly memorize and regurgitate information they barely understand, I expect students to actively engage with the material and to develop their own unique approach to problem solving. This means I am not the right tutor for students wanting me to just do their homework for them or cover a huge amount of material quickly. I love to teach people. However, I prefer to teach older students, such as high school and college kids, especially in math because they are often actually interested in the subject as apposed to completing their basic requirements. I am usually a very laid back teacher but can be very strict when the situation requires it.
