I believe all students have the ability to learn. It is my job as the teacher to find out what makes a student "click". I have learned through my experiences that connecting subject matter to a student's interests will ensure the student learns. All students need to feel successful!
I have 30 years experience in Elementary Education. I have taught grades 2-8 in a self-contained and block scheduled school. I served as Asst. Principal for 2 years and then moved to a district coordinator's job emphasizing curriculum. I have designed standardized tests for my district using Tennessee's new curriculum standards. I tutored students after school hours for many years with an emphasis on Language Arts and Elementary Math.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am currently an undergraduate student studying communications. I have held four collegiate journalism internships, two of which were federal internships in Oak Ridge, Tenn. In the past year, I served as assistant managing editor of my collegiate newspaper, The Oracle; served as assistant editor of the collegiate yearbook, The Eagle; and I served as a teaching assistant for the freshman introduction to journalism course at TN Tech University. This semester, I will serve as managing editor for both The Oracle and The Eagle, and I will continue to aid in teaching UNIV 1020. I will graduate with a B.S. in Communications December 19, 2009.

I have training in the Balanced Literacy program in which the word study, reading objectives, and writers' workshop are combined in a one and a half hour block of student driven, teacher facilitated activities. These are ultimately shared in a whole group and or one on one setting. When tutoring, I do a very brief mini lesson on the objective and we go immediatley into the task at hand with instant feedback and adaptation between the reader or writer and myself as we progress through the lesson. If the student is hung on vowel digraphs, we stop and examine those and do word work with several examples. My next choices for them to read would have more vowel digraphs. If my student is confused about where to put the punctuation in a quotation, we will do several real world scenerios where he will write statements, questions, and exclaimations correcting as we go along. I am a seasoned adjunct instructor and tutor at the introductory level at a Community College. I have taught a graduate level Chemistry course at a Masters granting College.
