GED is one of my top subjects!

I am a college graduate with a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science emphasis on Mathematics. I have been an educator most of my career. I began as a Substitute Teacher from Kindergarten to high school Physical Education you name it I taught it - this was not what I wanted to do at the time, but as I reminiscence now it was a pleasurable experience. Then I had the opportunity to teach computer basics to adults as well as K-12 children - now I felt like I was getting somewhere (I'm working in my field!). Then I found my teaching passion - teaching the GED course Oh Yeah! It was heart warming to see adults return to school take classes and then take and pass the GED Test. It was even a greater thrill to see the graduates in their caps and gowns at the graduation ceremony each June. Since then I am often saddened by the fact that since the mid 1990s many adult education programs have disapp ... read more

I began tutoring privately,as well as,for my school's learning center during the early 1990's. I have continued tutoring privately on and off for the past twenty years. I was a substitute teacher in California and Michigan during the 2000's. I also had my own high school level classroom in California for two school years. I was hired on an "Emergency Credential" because I had my BS but no teaching credential. I was laid off due to budget cuts in June of 2003. I also taught "at-risk" elementary age children during the summer for the Glendora Unifed School District in Glendora, CA. I tutored privately for three years from 2005-2008 in south Los Angeles County and north Orange County, CA. I can provide recommendations from these clients if you are interested. My youngest students were in first grade with my oldest students attending college.

My comments on tutoring GED : Passed virtual testing.

I started out tutoring elementary students in basic math and English grammar while I attended college part time in the 1980's. I continued tutoring young students and adults in the 1990's, tutoring Basic Math, Basic and Intermediate Algebra, Basic Geometry, English Composition, Speech, Study Skills and the Sciences. In addition, tips were given to enhance test-taking skills in hard-to-Ace subjects like Economics. I have tutored for the Sickle Cell Organization in 2001, helping students catch up numerous missed assignments. I tutor when the opportunity presents itself. Last Summer-Fall I assisted a nursing student in Speech and helped with two research papers. More recently (Oct.2009-Jan.2010), I worked tutoring students grade 2-10. From April to June 2010, I tutored high school students from Highland Park High School in Basic Math and Geometry, and Algebra I & II. Starting the latter ... read more

I enjoy working with children. I have volunteered my time as a football, baseball and basketball coach for several years. I believe in following the classroom curriculum of the student and using that as a starting point for learning. Communication is a key ingredient in the formula for success. It is essential to have a positive feedback mechanism in place to encourage education. Every child has his/her own strengths and it is my goal to discover, nurture, and maximize these areas.
I graduated from Lawrence Technological University with a bachelor's degree in Business / Computer Information Systems. I completed numerous courses in Mathematics, Science, Statistics, English Composition, and computers. I have recently graduated from Lawrence Technological University with a BA in graphic design, although all of my work experience has been with children. I started this experience in high school, as a teacher aide to a third grade class, creating lesson plans and working one-on-one. I have tutored in a professional tutoring center and privately for over 7 years working with children of all ages. The subjects I tutor include pre-calculus, advanced algebra, geometry, chemistry, biology, reading and English which I taught to kindergarten through college-level students. In the past year I have started substitute teaching at a private school for gifted children. I have gained valuable experience from this position, learning new teaching styles gaining a new perspective in my approach to teaching.

A Little Bit About Me...

I find that the most important aspect of teaching is to consider the student's perspective. It wasn't that long ago that I was a student myself, and I found the most effective teachers were the ones who were able to explain concepts in a variety of ways. Along with this I find it import for a teacher to fully understand a question being asked by a student. I have had teachers give me incorrect answers to questions because their was a communication disconnect. Exercising patience and understanding cannot be over emphasized. I try to give students a good understanding of a theory, concept, or method which can be applied to solve a variety of problems or answer a variety of questions.
I am a graduate of Macomb Mathematics Science Technology Center (MMSTC). This is a magnet program reserved for the top 72 high school students(per grade level)in Macomb County. Throughout high schoo ... read more

I have a hands on teaching style that mixes fun activities with an emphasis on asking children questions. I pay attention to each individual student and try to figure out what their learning style is. I try to center activities around how they learn (ie. if they are a textile learner, I'll bring in physical shapes to work on geometric problems as opposed to worksheets). I believe that application and explanation to others are the best route of learning, so I like to have kids who are at different levels work together on subjects they may have difficulties with.
I have had nearly five years of experience in tutoring and mentoring. During college I was an English as a Second Language (ESL) tutor at two different non-profits. I believe in empowering our students whenever possible. By this I mean allowing the students to be in charge and have control over their own learning by giving students options. I like working with students in small groups, where I mix their levels of ability thus allowing then to learn not only from me, but from each other as well!

I have taught physical science and life science in New York public high schools since 1996. I have taught at Brooklyn Tech and Midwood H.S., two of the leading high schools for physical science in the state. Many of my students have been accepted into leading colleges and universities across the country. I have received excellent training and evaluations from my supervisors, who have taught me to use non-traditional as well as traditional methods of instruction and assessment, such as collaborative learning and portfolio assessment.
