"Children are the world's most valuable resource" - JFK

I believe that a child cannot fully come to comprehend subject matter without having a chance to be immersed in it first. This philosophy lends to the hands-on, question-oriented form of teaching that I so firmly stand by. I realize that different people employ different strategies in coming to learn new material and I will adjust the way I teach as best I can in order to accommodate each and every individual detail. Much the same as the famous social psychologist Lev Vygotsky emphasized the zone of proximal development, I believe that education should not be approached from the standpoint of "teaching to the test" as much as it deserves to be about aiding a child in coming up with creative alternatives in an effort to master the concept in question and develop an intrinsic motivation to actually want to learn.
Working with children always has been and always will be a passion of m ... read more

My comments on tutoring ACT : Math and Science portions only!

Very much based on working with what the student knows. I tend to start by having them explain to me what they are doing and what they think. I then provide some guidance and walk through a sample problem with them. I ask that they try another problem like it on their own and ask questions to prompt them as they work.
I started tutoring in high school for extra credit. I have primarily tutored in mathematics and general chemistry! I tutored a girl in Algebra 1 for a year, helped my best friend and her Mom with college mathematics, and worked through college algebra with my husband. In college I was a teachers assistant for general chemistry 1 and tutored in quantitative chemical analysis. Since then I have tutored a gentlemen for the math portion of his GED. Basically, I love the one-on-one opportunity to help people to find that "light-bulb moment" where the math and science is no ... read more

It’s not just an A C T score, it’s your future!

One on one or small group
I am a retired public school teacher with over 25 years of experience. I have also A C T coached approximately 2000 students over the past 17 years. Many of those students attend the top tier colleges, earning admission and scholarships based on an A C T score above 30. I have developed my own materials which are highly effective. I am only interested in working with students who are hard-working and motivated. Students often travel from surrounding states and counties to enroll in my boot camp or weekly sessions. My daughter and husband are physicians at UW Hosptial so now I’m in a position to offer summer classes in the Madison area. If you are interested in learning how to beat the test, and you want to learn more about my qualifications and experience, access my website at www.joylentz.com

ACT is one of my top subjects! 36 ACT and got into the Ivy school of my dreams. (Also, I hated impersonal test prep classes.) We'll use guided practice, meta-test strategies, and the essential skill of "making test prep not a total drag" to ensure your/your student's success!

Fun. We'll talk about things in a way you understand, pursue strategies that are both silly and make sense, and use metaphors that are so ridiculous that you'll never forget them. I get very excited about things. It's very exciting. We'll have fun.
Tutored my way through high school, college, and have spent the years after graduation part-time tutoring high school students to get into whichever schools they set their sights on. My biggest pet peeve was boring classes with strategies that didn't make sense to me, and I'm here to fix that by offering a personalized style with in-depth analysis of your strengths, areas for improvement, and desired learning styles!

Math and Science Tutoring

In terms of online tutoring. I make use of a headset microphone and a touch tablet. As well as many free online applications, such as a whiteboard, Skype, and educational resources. During session I prefer to use the course work and text assigned to the student. Doing so allows for the structure of our sessions to easily mesh with those of the course.
While obtaining my B.S. I tutored through a community development after school program for a year; in which I helped 4th-8th graders with their math and reading homework. I like to laugh, have fun, and create a comfortable environment for individuals to learn. It is important to have that type of space so as to ensure that students do not form a sense of anxiety when entering the room or when studying that particular subject. I love creating a variety of activities: group, individual, hands-on, problem solving, comprehension and reading, and activities where students have to get up and move around. As long as concepts and terms are rehearsed and relearned students will be able to store it better than if they learned it once and then move on to the next concept.

Having my bachelor degree in English and Philosophy, I have been given a unique understanding towards how to ask questions to make people think about the material they're reading, and what questions the material is trying to ask. Supporting this is my background as a writing center assistant at college which not only offered me the chance to improve my own work, but, also to learn how to guide frustrated students without giving in to the temptation to do the work for them. During this past year, I have worked with second and third generation Chinese children, teaching English, math, art and science on a first grade level.
I believe that children want to learn and discover things about the world, and my goal as an educator is to foster that curiosity and channel it towards classroom subjects by a more holistic style of teaching that incorporates personal interests with the standar ... read more

I enjoy helping people find and understand information. When teaching, I like to encourage my students to find their own path and reasoning to the answer. I encourage supervised and structured trial and error where the student tries different methods to finding the answer. This nurtures the excitement of discovery and the joy of learning something new.
First, I am a life long learner and love reading. Growing up knowing that knowledge is power, it seemed as though anything was achievable. But as I began learning, I wondered why some things came easier to others and why some kids needed more type, and with this I began to investigate, I have learned different ways of conveying the same information in different styles. Everyone has the potential to learn information, it just depeneds on how they learn, and if everyone could be educated the difference in education with dramatically increase the world and peoples lifestyle would improve. Making an positive impact on the next generation, is the most important idea that can move our world forward.

In my Masters in Teaching program we are learning about differentiation and working to find the best vehicle by which to present information to students. For example, if a student has a talent and passion for music, perhaps setting some of their social studies and science materials to song will help them better absorb the information. Also, the best way to create connections in students minds is to have them learn and then create something representing their learning. Perhaps they learn about an era of history and then they act out a scene that may have happened, or they visually represent a science concept. I also am a very organized person with good study habits that I can model for your student and help them put into practice.

A Little Bit About Me...

There is no better moment that when a child becomes engaged and starts understanding and asking questions. Once a child starts asking questions you know that they are excited about it and want to learn. When teaching my goal is always to get children excited about what they are doing and then proceed from there. All children have different strengths and I try to work from those strengths.
I recently graduated with my Bachelors of Science in Biomedical Engineering. I have taken extensive courses in math and science. Math and science are fields that I love and excel at. While in undergrad I was active in many student organizations and volunteer opportunities. I volunteered at science olympiad for a year and also tutored middle school students. I have many younger siblings, all of whom I have helped with homework on several occasions.
