My goal as a teacher is to be as effective as possible and motivate the student to reach their goals. I usually explain a problem verbally first, then demonstrate how it is solved before working on the student's ability to complete the task on his/her own. I find using contrasts effective since showing how things differ in their purpose, form or origin is often half the battle in understanding a lesson. This also helps a student understand and remember formulas. Math, science, and language all have formulas that can be applied to figure out unfamiliar problems and help check a student check their work and identify their own mistakes.
