I like to get a sense of what the student already knows and try to build on that knowledge.
I have tutored on a volunteer basis with the Holyoke Tutor/Mentor Program for more than a year. I have also tutored privately. My experience has been with adults, however, I would like to add experience working with secondary school students. I can help with SAT's, MCAS, and just provide support for a student who needs some extra help.

My comments on tutoring Pre-Algebra : I took Advanced Pre-Algebra in seventh grade and received an A for my efforts. I was at the top of my class, and as math builds upon its-self, I have been using those concepts every since in both science and math courses.

I have helped my classmates and have had one official student as of this summer. However, I have learned how to explain concepts so that students dont just memorize, they will gain a thought process and applicable knowledge that will enable them to solve even the most complex problems. Having this mentality of preparation and success will being them to reach their goals.
Teaching new concepts, practice applying the new material, review, and more practice of the material to solidify the concepts.

A Little Bit About Me...

My passions for knowledge and the sense of fulfillment I get from learning along with the desire I have for sharing that passion are the foundation of my educational philosophy. I have little doubt that students today want to learn, want to discover, and want to understand and contribute to the world in which they live. I recognize that my passion for knowledge and learning alone, while necessary, is not sufficient to make me an effective teacher. It also requires establishing a rapport with my students based upon mutual respect and grounded in empathy. It requires a classroom environment that is free from stress and fear of expression, where students are actively engaged in their own learning.

With my major throughout College all areas of Business were reviewed, Marketing, Management, Accounting & Finance and then one was chosen as your concentration to primarily focus on. I chose Finance with a minor in Information Systems. I have done accounting and payroll for about six years prior to about a year and a half ago switching over to do work in Information Systems where I am presently. I enjoy working with the mathematical side of my major very much and bring a lot of experience with that from my education. Math is definitely a strong suit for me. My journey through the undergraduate sciences has given me the skills needed to be an effective tutor. Holding a 3.6 GPA, I was able to work with students in group settings, teaching as well as learning. As a member of the chemistry society, we also offered peer tutoring where I was an active participant. My bachelors degree consists of a minor in chemistry while majoring in exercise science. In addition, I have completed additional science coursework in preparation for my fall 2009 MCAT testing. I am currently on waitlists for several medical colleges and wish to further my knowledge of the sciences by interpreting it to others.

I teach to my students so they can learn. Each of my students has a different modality of acquiring and retaining information, so I assess that style and present instruction in a way that is meaningful. My work towards a master's degree in special education highlighted the various ways in which a student gains knowledge. I use that information to engage and educate my students.
I began my teaching career in Cooperstown, NY in 2001, as a mid-career professional in search of a meaningful job. Previously, I worked in the entertainment industry. Seeking to make a difference in the lives of our children, I moved to Los Angeles to teach English to the children of Latino immigrants. It was the highlight of my teaching profession. Subsequently, my husband and I relocated to NY state where I have been teaching high school (all subjects) to emotionally challenged adolescent students. I h ... read more

I have tutored at the college level for three years, mainly because I enjoy doing so. I take pride in helping others understand concepts and do better in school. I'm very easy going during tutoring sessions, and open to students asking questions until they understand the information. I take multiple approaches to explaining concepts if students don't understand them at first. I also have experience working with high school and middle school students, as I have volunteered at such schools, but from a recreational standpoint. Thus, I can relate well with students of all age levels.
