My comments on tutoring Biology : I took both Honors Biology in ninth grade and AP Biology in twelfth grade. I received an A in both courses for my hard work and was in the top of my class both years. I mastered the basics from Honors in AP biology. One emphasis my teacher had was to be able to explain the concepts both in writing and verbally so I have become a very effective tutor in this subject area.

I have helped my classmates and have had one official student as of this summer. However, I have learned how to explain concepts so that students dont just memorize, they will gain a thought process and applicable knowledge that will enable them to solve even the most complex problems. Having this mentality of preparation and success will being them to reach their goals.
Teaching new concepts, practice applying the new material, review, and more practice of the material to solidify the concepts.

I would best describe my method of teaching as a give and take experience. Through diologue, I am able to lead the student through the thought process that will derive the correct answer. Giving bits of information can provoke a new approach to the task at hand. I also feel it is important to individualize each person being tutored, as everyone learns differently. Some learn best through the use of things such as pnuemonic devices, while others may need repitition to effectivily remember the material. The most important aspect of my teaching style is my ability to relax my students. I believe if you are in a relaxed environment, learning becomes easy. Chemistry is a difficult subject for many students and I am successful in giving my students the confidence that they can indeed understand the subject matter.

I graduated with a major in Chemistry and minor in Biology. I have volunteered at homework centers at a couple libraries in Minnesota. Also I volunteered at a Multicultural School to help new immigrant children learn english and assist them in preparing for the GED exam. One summer I worked at a science camp to organize and coordinate fun and interesting science workshops for young children.

I believe that each student learns differently. The order in which a topic is taught to one person may not be the best way for someone else to understand the material. So I strongly support the use of flow charts, comparison charts, timelines, and picture diagrams with detailed descriptions. I think it is important to first identify where in the lecture the material becomes confusing or difficult, and then determine which organizational diagram should be used to simplify the flow and details of the material presented. I hope after the tutoring sessions the students gain new study techniques such as using diagrams and charts to speed up and clarify any type of subject matter that is presented to them in the future.
