I've always loved to read, I inhereited it from my father who got it from his father. I'm an avid writer as well. Every one can learn. Sometimes an individual learns in their own unique style and finding that style is the key to teaching them. The best way to teach someone is to guide them when they come to a road block, rather than to give them the answer. I think Math is the most beautiful subject and the highest form of human expression. A lot of times people are turned away from it due to a high school math experience that they perceive as dry and boring. When I tell people I love math, I too often hear "well, better you than me!" I think part of the high school math experience should include turning students on to mathematical discovery. Confronting confusion and working through to develop an understanding that feels personal and thorough. I believe that everyone must learn in an individual way at their own pace and I am prepared to put in the necessary effort to give my students that opportunity. I have eight years experience teaching Math at Lyndon State College in Vermont and at Lorain County Community College in Elyria, Ohio. I was also a writing tutor at The Writing Center at Lyndon State. In addition, I tutored students there in English,Math,and Economics for a program called Project Excel. I also attended tutor training sessions as part of that job. Additionally, I tutored college students privately while earning my degree at The University of Rhode Island. As a full-time instructor at Lorain, I was required to schedule 10 office hours per week to be available to students, so I gained a lot more experience in the tutoring process during that time.

I believe in teaching to the student’s style of learning. If convention works use it. Picking up on a student’s interest and intergrading the educational experience is essential. In other words if a student is interested in horses, the classroom should be moved to the barn. If math is the subject in question then measuring food would be an excellent way to learn fractions. In the past I have written several programs for my sons to use to learn both math and spelling. I find the instant response from the programs was a very effective tool for them to learn. They were more willing to study as they could use the computer.
