A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that students need to be challenged. When they are highly challenged, they really produce. In my tutoring experience, my students' test scores rose two grade levels in ten weeks because they were challenged. Previously, these students were thought to not be able to speak, read, or write English, and were pre-testing at very low grade levels.
For the first three years out of the university, I was a school librarian, and was board certified K-12 by the Washington State Board of Education as a result of this experience. From 2006-2008, I have been tutoring writing at Northern New Mexico College, from 4th grade remedial level through college papers in all subjects. I am presently working in an Upward Bound program for 9th graders, to help increase their study skills.

I have an Elementary Education Degree from the College of Santa Fe. While persuing my degree I worked a an instructional assistant in an elementary school. The majority of students I worked with were special needs students. This helps me to understand that all students can learn when their needs are meet. I have been tutoring for about three years now. Ideally, teaching styles should be individually tailored to the student's needs. The one-on-one environment of tutoring offers an exceptional opportunity to do this! The learning styles of students vary widely; however, I believe all students respond to an approach which includes kindness, respect, persistence, and the acceptance of the student as an individual. My philosophy for effective education is comprised of six components creativity, character, culture, civic capacity, shared governance and student centeredness. I believe student centeredness is the trunk and the other components are the branches. Each component is connected to the other and they share common characteristics. For me teaching is about making the connection for students between the literature, writing, piece of art or media and their lives.
