Experience Summary
NYS certified 7-12 mathematics teacher. As a child there were times I struggled with math. I didn't always "see" the patterns or understood the flexibility and beauty of numbers. Yet with ith persistence, perseverance and encouraged mistakes ALL students can learn to see the flexibility and creativity inherent in math by helping them discover many different ways of seeing numbers, using multiple strategies with multiple entry points.
Teaching Style
I use a whole brain approach to learning. This involves using gestures, chunking/practice of concepts that compose mathematical processes, and embracing vocabulary.
My Hobbies
Learning how we learn, keeping current with educational research, reading, listening and playing music (music is highly mathematical). I have played drums since I was 13.
Other Comments
Noted Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck has shown with a growth mindset and effort, children can grow their math ability. Persistence and encouraged mistakes results in the growth of new synapses and neural pathways in the brain. Turns out making mistakes is one of the most useful things kids can do to help make meaning in math when they learn what doesn’t work

Math is a highly creative and flexible subject. The most current research shows us that:
Everyone can learn math to the highest levels.
Mistakes are valuable.
Questions are really important.
Math is about connections and communicating.
Math is about creativity and making sense.
Depth is more important than speed.
Math class is about learning not performing.
Every child can learn math. The potential of the brain to grow is HUGE. Research tells us without a solid understanding of numbers, students will fail to comprehend higher level math. For teaching grade specific common core skills, I have been schooled in and use the whole brain methods employed in the research based and award winning JUMP Math program from Toronto, Canada. I am also schooled in Singapore Math. Both programs are fully aligned to the common core standards. |
