Experience Summary

Experience overview: 5-years experience as a substitute teacher, worked as a tutor for one year, volunteered to assist teachers in the classroom, and is in studying to become a licensed elementary teacher. Details I am currently in my fifth year of substitute teaching. The students have come from a wide variety of backgrounds and with varying degree of academic skills. I have had taught in all subject areas. In the classroom I strive to be well-prepared, organized, engaging, and accessible. I am on the preferred substitute list of many teachers and often I am contacted directly by schools and teachers when a need arises. One teacher recently sent the following in an e-mail: "Thank you for doing such a wonderful job with my class! I have heard so many positive comments from both students and staff members about what they observed during your time in the classroom. I will definitely request you again for future absences because I feel very comfortable allowing you to introduce new concepts so there is not a break in students' learning. You did a wonderful job and I will spread the word about using you as a sub in our building." My substitute teaching has informed and been informed by pursuit of an Elementary Teachers license through the Post-Bachelors Teacher Preparation program with Western Governors University. The program started with a history of education, followed by a study of general education practices. Building on this knowledge the course has taken up study of the particular teaching practices of each subject area. Recently the program called for an observation of 60 hours of first and sixth grade class time. Watching seasoned professionals and being mentored was enlightening. With the completion of my student teaching in the fall of 2016 I will be eligible for licensing. I have worked as a general tutor and in preparing students for the A.C.T. for the past year. The emphasis of my efforts have been on building comfort levels in each subject area, teaching strategies for testing and learning, and building upon what students already know. Students have regularly seen improvements over baselines and previous test scores. To accomplish this I have had to be well-prepared, adaptive, and in regular communication with parents regarding progress. I have also volunteered to my assist students in my son's classroom with basic math facts and reading skills.

Teaching Style

My teaching style emphasizes intuition and adaptability to ensure a good fit between teaching and learning styles. Equal emphasis is placed on learning current material and the confidence for future learning. Teaching methods will vary depending on the skills, interests, and temperaments of each student.

My Hobbies

I am an unabashed bookworm. My non-fiction interests include history, biography, economics, culture, religious history, mental health, comparative religion, and etymology. My bookshelves feature the fiction works of Stephen King, Kurt Vonnegut, Albert Camus, Ernest Hemmingway, Hermann Hesse, Ian Flemming, Arthur C. Clarke, and many, many more. In addition to reading I am interested in cross-stitch, modern art, Batman, and listening to music, especially Mid-Twentieth Century Jazz.
