Experience Summary
During my years at MSU, I tutored for the math department both in their help lab and as one of their recommended private tutors. Also during my final year working toward my degree I worked at Sylvan teaching children from 2nd grade through 12th. During the summer of 2013, I had the opportunity to work toward a teacher certification by volunteering at Hirschi High School. After attaining my degree, I began working at Mathnasium. In Chicago, I served as the director of training for two years. Now that I am back in Wichita Falls, I am the assistant director of the local branch of Mathnasium. I continue to tutor private lessons and welcome the opportunity to be part of anyone's learning journey.
Teaching Style
With the experiences of Sylvan, Mathnasium, and High School lessons under my belt, I have combined the best aspects that each has to offer. Rather than holding a student's hand through a lesson and letting them develop a learned helplessness that can add to test anxiety, I use Socratic questioning to help people make important conclusions about topics so that they retain what they are seeing. Through a combination of practice and discussion, I strive to build confidence as well as skill so that students can go forward into their mathematical endeavors.
My Hobbies
I enjoy reading and am in the process of trying to write my own teen fiction book. While I am trying to get back into running, I prefer biking as I get to see more and go further. Whenever I get to visit my brother in Austin, our favorite thing to do is hike the many trails the city has to offer. More recently I have begun to get into disc golf and try to go out every Friday morning :)
