I consider myself to be a uniquely seasoned, qualified, and experienced tutor who can adapt to any situation and to any student in order to benefit their education and learning experience. Over the years I have taught virtually every academic discipline, served as a T.A. at my alma mater, the University of Southern California. But my specialty is in tutoring/preparing students to take any type of college entrance exam or standardized exam, such as the SAT, ACT, SAT II, AP, LSAT, Teacher's Certification, and GRE. This Fall I will continue my PhD in Political Science-International Relations at UNLV and have a love for both learning and teaching. I have tutored for the past ten years in various areas of study, both common and unique, but have focused primarily on the above-mentioned exams. The foundation of my ability to teach effectively is simply based on my own natural talents but most importantly on the training I received throughout my education.
I personally scored in the 99th percentile on my SAT and ACT exams, and a 329 composite score on the GRE after college. In multiple AP exams at Durango High School in Las Vegas, NV, I scored a 5/5 in AP English, AP American & World History, AP Spanish, AP Government, and AP Calculus among others. On a personal level, I am the eldest of four children and the father of an autistic child and have learned to teach with virtually endless patience and empathy. I have learned that while a tutor must push his students, he must also progress at a rate which allows the student to learn most effectively and retain the information permanently as opposed to just absorbing information only to expel it from the mind once it is no longer needed to, for example, pass an exam or perform a speech in front of the class. I believe that memorizing is NOT learning.
With that being said, I truly don't believe that anyone can learn anything without being comfortable and at ease. I like to have fun with my students, whether we are meeting in person or on-line. It is important to always keep a sense of humor and realize that no matter how much pressure a student may be under, it is my job as his or her tutor to remind them that the world will not end if they are trying their best but simply need more time and practice to learn the information. Most of the time, pressure paralyzes the mind and more specifically paralyzes the brain's ability to consume and retain new information.
I realize that every student is different, so if I can promise one thing, I can promise this: I will push your child to work hard but also make it fun and treat him or her as an equal. I will adjust to his or her pace once I determine what that is and then make adjustments based on my vast experience working with students of all ages, personalities, abilities, and even learning disabilities. | Biology is one of those subjects that is taught in what seems like every grade and college as well, with the subject matter increasing in difficulty every year. I believe, in fact, that this method is the most effective that we currently have. But there are many problems that have left so many students behind. The source of the problem is that if a student has one single semester that they do poorly in Biology for whatever reason, it creates an endless loop of failure because for that student, they are way behind during the next year of Biology and therefore fail or barely pass that semester or year of Biology again, and that vicious cycle just revolves again and again. That is why private tutoring must pick up the slack and make sure that every student catches up to where they are scheduled to be until we can make some changes to our educational system. |

For example, when we all first read Huckleberry Finn (maybe it was just me because I read it at a very early age,) we thought it was simply a story about a black man and a young white boy running away from home and getting into trouble and comedic situations along the way. Now though, we know it was about slavery and Huck and his slave friend's attempt to escape to freedom. The successful Composition of the best of those types of stories involve hiding the true story of the book or story in the words until the reader finishes the novel and realizes the book was much more complicated and "deep" than he thought while he was reading it. |

| Along with studying American and foreign literature for years, I have tutored students in the intricacies of literature. Most of the best novels ever written have been written by people we have never heard of because they were marginalized by society because they were born in the wrong place at the wrong time. Many worshiped the "wrong" God or had the "wrong" skin color or chose to love the "wrong" gender or were of the "wrong" social status or class. Such authors who wrote amazing novels and plays but who were ostracized during their lifetimes and still became famous were Oscar Wilde and Tennessee Williams, Walt Whitman, T.S.Eliot, Truman Capote, and Virginia Woolf, but the vast majority of timeless literature was written by perfectly "normal" people. If I am granted the privilege to tutor you in Literature, we will not only read the material, but dissect it, examine each line closely to try to get into the mind of the author, and attempt to write some material as close as we can to that author's style and composition. |

| To be honest, I don't remember my exact score when I took the LSAT as a senior in college. However, I do know it was high enough to receive offers of admissions to several respected law schools. And even though I left law school after less than one semester to instead pursue a PhD, I have learned after both taking and tutoring the SAT, ACT, GRE, and LSAT, that they are all virtually the same exam but with varying difficulty. Because I have been so successful at taking the SAT & ACT (99th percentile on both) and the GRE (a 329), I can confidently say that I am able to do well on these exams. | The general term of "Math" is an umbrella that covers and includes Geometry, Algebra, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Statistics, and countless others, in which I have personally done very well and have improved the scores of my students. | As explained above, I was a political science major in college because I was intrigued with the American Democratic system of government and held such respect for a nation and a government, that with all its pitfalls, would peacefully hand over the powers and trappings of government every 4 years. Every time I watch a Presidential Inauguration I am so proud and moved that with all that is at stake and against our human nature to just take what we want and make excuses later, there is not a single tank or soldier marching down Pennsylvania Avenue to take over the government. For a nation of almost 400 million people to adhere to the rule of law and the peaceful transfer of power is inspiring and sacred. Our Founding Fathers got that much right. I would be the perfect tutor of Political Science because of my passion for it, my knowledge of it, and my ability to help people understand the hierarchy of political power,from a mayor or county commissioner to a governor to a congressman and senator to the President of the United States and our nation's political relationship with foreign nations. It is all very complex, and I know I can break it down and explain it to everyone to the point that everyone I tutor will leave my class with a new outlook on the United States of America. |

| Although I wish I knew the intricacies of Shakespeare's works, the plays that my tutors and I have read and even acted out loud by reading each character's lines out loud, have been absolutely wonderful. When I think of Shakespeare's writings, one word always comes to mind: perfection. I truly hope I can teach you some of his masterpieces such as Hamlet, Romeo&Juliet, A MidSummer Night's Dream, Julius Caesar, Henry VIII, The Tempest, A Comedy of Errors, The Taming of the Shrew and so many more. In truth, the fact that he was able to write so many intricate and balanced masterpieces is in itself remarkable. We would have so much fun reading his plays and learning about them at the same time! |

| Although because my mother and her side of the family was from Santiago, Chile, I was exposed to Spanish at a very young age. But because only English was spoken at home, I would say that my skills in the language are due to that early exposure and then due solely to my education. I took three years of Spanish in high school, including AP Spanish, and scoring a 5/5 on the AP exam. My Spanish at that point was so advanced because I caught on so fast and had spent my teens speaking to my aunts and grandmother in Spanish, I was able to test out of 4 semesters of Spanish at the University of Southern California, satisfying my foreign language requirement for graduation. I therefore was lucky to not only earn a full scholarship to USC, but to also graduate an entire year early. Since then, I have spent almost 10 years tutoring students and adults in Spanish at all levels and for all reasons, whether it be for classes, exams, or for an adult's desire to learn Spanish to become a more competitive job applicant. In conclusion, while I admit I may not be completely fluent, I am able to say confidently that I am an experienced and competent Spanish-speaker and teacher. Because after all, I think it is much more helpful to a student to be taught by a sub-fluent Spanish speaker who knows how to teach the language than by a fluent speaker who has no idea how hard it is to learn the language and therefore is unable to teach it very well. |

| I am an excellent public speaker because I have an enormous amount of experience and most importantly in public speaking, an endless amount of confidence. Serving as a USC Student Senator, as a member of my high school's student council, and as the President and Vice President of my youth group has provided me countless hours to give speeches and speak publicly, because practice is a priceless commodity. In terms of public speaking itself, one must speak calmly and clearly, keep their body language neutral and not threatening or challenging (unless this is intended.) Also, one must speak intelligently, continuously making valid and logical points so that the point of their speaking is understood and their speech is not wasted or given in vain. For me, public speaking was initially extremely intimidating and scary. I would stand up, and without exception, lock up, begin shaking slightly, and become unable to speak a single word. With the help of those older than me and those who were comfortable speaking in front of crowds of one hundred or three, I was able to learn how to speak like them. Also, and maybe most importantly, they of course practiced with me privately, but also forced me to speak in front of those large groups that I mentioned in the beginning of this passage. Ironically enough, if it wasn't for them, I would never have been able to be a teacher and later a tutor. |

| From the time I was a very young child I was able to write well and express what I was thinking on paper. In fact in the 5th grade I remember that every student was required to take the same test. A few weeks later, about ten student were called into a particular classroom where we were surprised to see our parents. It turned out that the test was an aptitude test and we were the highest scoring students and I learned that I scored a perfect score on the writing and grammar portion of the test. Obviously I was only in the 5th grade, but throughout my academic career I always did well in writing. I got an A in English Composition, an A in AP English, got a 5 out of 5 in the AP English exam, and received a perfect score on the writing section of the ACT. I don't remember my exact score, but I also did extremely well on the writing section of the LSAT's. I hope to be able to use my writing skills to help you improve your writing abilities, and I know if we work together, meaning I keep my patience and you don't let your frustration get in the way of your goals, we will succeed without a doubt. |
