Experience Summary
I am a third year education major at the University of Florida. I have five years of experience as a tutor for elementary students, ranging from grades k- 6 and two years of experience as an Alachua County public school volunteer, including experience with students with special needs. My responsibilities as a volunteer included individual and group assistance with classwork, such as math, reading, reading comprehension, phonics, and writing. As part of my teacher training, I was placed in neighboring Gainesville elementary schools as a tutor/mentor. I taught and reviewed third grade mathematic concepts, such as multi-digit addition and subtraction, multiplication, division, number ordering, and skip counting using games and creative activities. The student explored the many properties of mathematics through manipulatives and discussion. In addition, I received a weeklong, 20 hour training in a specific teaching/intervention strategy before I began tutoring a struggling reader in the first grade. Through this program, the student was given tier two supports in phonological and phonemic awareness, reading fluency and comprehension, vocabulary, and writing.
Teaching Style
My teaching style is largely reliant on the principles of systematic and explicit instruction. When teaching a new concept or reviewing a concept that the student is struggling with, I like to begin with content with which the student feels comfortable and familiar. Thus, we can build up confidence and feelings of competence before we move on to harder material. In addition, I believe in the individuality of the learning process. Students learn in different ways and different paces, which I strive to consider and respect.
