Experience Summary

Hello there! My name is Nikhil and I would love to be your English tutor and help you improve your confidence with the language. I have several years of teaching experience, which have helped me develop the important skills of patience, communication, creativity, and being organized which are important to being an effective teacher. I used to teach Economics to college freshmen and sophomores while I was a graduate student at the University of Virginia. I was also a Mathematics tutor while I was a senior at Cornell University. Recently, I have worked with adult ESL students in my community who are looking to improve their English skills as well as those looking to take the United States citizenship exam. I have a 160 hour teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) certificate. As part of my certification process, I studied about the important skills that one needs to teach English learners such as reading, writing, speaking, and listening. In addition, I had specific modules related to teaching grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary. I put together lesson plans that focused on the integration of these different skills so that students could become more comfortable with the language. In addition to teaching English to non-native speakers, I can also help native speakers with the English sections of the ACT and SAT exams. I can help you develop the confidence to become a more critical reader and improve your scores by using different test taking strategies. I am flexible with regards to scheduling dates/times for tutoring sessions. I am also willing to drive out to meet you at your preferred location. Teaching Style

In my ESL classes, I try to stress communication and emphasize the skills that will help the students use the language independently rather than lecture them. I will use a similar approach with you, but will be flexible enough to adapt to your needs. I will have challenging assessments for my students to ensure they understand the concepts covered in the class and provide insightful feedback so that they can continue to improve.
