About Me

Experience Summary

I have years of experience in varying forms of educations, but my most relevant is the two years (2012-2014) I lived in South Korea, teaching elementary and middle school students in English as a foreign language at a private academy. During that time period, I also tutored two adults in conversation, vocabulary, and diction. This experience led me to the decision to pursue a Masters in teaching, and until I complete that goal, I am going to keep my skills fresh with tutoring.

Teaching Style

I prefer a very conversational approach with my students. The style encourages mutual respect and allows me to observe more closely how the student learns. In addition, I feel learning is absorbed better when the information is couched in a story, and I believe conversation is a style of storytelling.

My Hobbies

I spend most of my time reading, and I particularly love sci-fi. I also enjoy running and fitness. A new interest and passion of mine is tabletop gaming, a subject I am currently educating myself on. Finally, I am known to occasionally some craft beer or fine wine.

Subject Commentary

American History Proficiency: I know the basics
I have a real passion for history. I prefer learning history through stories and relating to figures in the past, as opposed to rote memorization.
Composition Proficiency: Experienced
I majored in Journalism, graduating summa cum laude, and my focus was in writing, studying many different styles.
Creative Writing Proficiency: Experienced
I majored in Journalism, graduating summa cum laude, and my focus was in writing, studying many different styles.
Elementary Grammar Proficiency: Experienced
From 2012 to 2014, I lived in South Korea, teaching the non-English speaking elementary students how to conjugate their verbs, four semesters a year! Grammar is not easy, but with some fun games, repetition, and simplification, it is learnable.
Elementary Phonics This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Experienced
When I was a child, I learned to read through phonics, and it is honestly the most important thing I ever learned. I enjoy passing on my love for phonics, through songs, games, rhymes, and tongue-twisters! I also have some experience with linguistics, and that knowledge helps me when teaching non-native speakers or children who have trouble creating specific sounds.
Elementary Reading Proficiency: Experienced
From 2012 to 2014, I lived in South Korea, teaching the non-English speaking elementary students language arts, four semesters a year. I am proud of the growth I saw in those students, so I can only imagine how I would feel working with native speakers!
Elementary Vocabulary Proficiency: Experienced
From 2012 to 2014, I lived in South Korea, teaching the non-English speaking elementary students vocabulary and giving them daily vocabulary tests. We also played spelling and matching games to help them with retention!
English Proficiency: Experienced
I majored in Journalism, graduating summa cum laude, and my focus was in writing, studying many different styles. When testing for the ACT in high school, I scored perfectly in the English section.
English ESOL This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Experienced
I spent two years (2012 - 2014) living in South Korea, teaching English to elementary and middle school students. I also received my certification for teaching English as a foreign language from ITTT (International TEFL TESOL Training) in 2012, after completing one of their more rigorous courses.
Grammar Proficiency: Experienced
Grammar is a complicated subject, and it is one even I have to revisit on occasion! However, it's a subject I enjoy, understand, and enjoy simplifying for others.
Journalism Proficiency: Experienced
I majored in Journalism, graduating summa cum laude, and my focus was in writing, studying many different styles.
Language Arts Proficiency: Experienced
Language Arts was always my favorite subject growing up, and it's a subject I taught daily for two years straight in South Korea.
Reading Proficiency: Experienced
I am an avid reader with a collection of over 300 books, but learning to teach reading was not easy for me! I worked hard at becoming proficient in helping students pick up on key themes and information, while still enjoying the story overall.
Reading Comprehension Proficiency: Experienced

Spelling Proficiency: Experienced
Vocabulary and spelling is very fun for me, especially when you look into the history of words, where they come from and why they're spelled the way they are.
TOEFL Proficiency: Experienced
I spent two years (2012 - 2014) living in South Korea, teaching English to elementary and middle school students. I also received my certification for teaching English as a foreign language from ITTT (International TEFL TESOL Training) in 2012, after completing one of their more rigorous courses.
World History Proficiency: I know the basics
I have a real passion for history. I prefer learning history through stories and relating to figures in the past, as opposed to rote memorization.
Writing This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Experienced
There are few things I love more than teaching someone the basics of composing a strong essay, editing their drafts, and seeing understanding click in their eyes. I went to school for journalism, but I took an array of writing classes. I use this experience to meet the needs and talents of the students I encounter.
