About Me

Experience Summary

Studied marine biology for 4 years at university, completing three summer research programs with three well-known marine institutions. During the summer of 2010, I interned with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography creating 3-dimensional models of an endangered species of coral (Acropora palmata) in order to gain better estimates of surface area. The summer of 2011 I spent conducting an AAUS (scientific diving) internship in Anacortes, Washington, at the Shannon Point Marine Center, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). My work that summer involved finding a better method using SCUBA to monitor 6 outplant sites of juvenile pinto abalone (Haliotis kamtschatkana). The fall and spring of 2012/2013 I spent working with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) on my honors project, assessing the effects of heavy metal contaminants on long-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus capensis) in the S. California Bight. Following graduation, I began working for NOAA in a marine mammal genetics lab utilizing PCR, qPCR, and genetic sequencing to determine population dynamics for several different species. After working with NOAA for a year, I was selected as the 2013 North American Rolex Scholar for the Our World-Underwater Scholarship Society and was able to work on a variety of marine science projects, underwater film projects, and delve into the world of technical SCUBA diving.

Subject Commentary

Marine Biology This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Experienced
I received my B.Sc. in Biology with a marine emphasis in 2012 with an overall gpa of 3.7. I have conducted marine science research with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (La Jolla, CA), the Shannon Point Marine Center (Anacortes, WA), and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA, La Jolla, CA). I worked for NOAA for a year in a marine mammal genetics lab following graduation from university. While in school, I was a TA for a Marine Invertebrate Zoology and a Marine Vertebrate Zoology course. I tutored marine science students for 2 years.
