To Whom It May Concern
I would like to apply for the tutoring position. I believe my extensive work experience in both the public and private sectors of education has given me the knowledge and skills to succeed in this position.
Dorcas Place International, which services people from all over the world, mirrors the goals of A.C.E. in “preparing students linguistically and culturally for their educational and professional pursuits as well as providing opportunities for personal growth.” As an instructor, I prepare my students to pass the CASAS (Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment Systems), which often requires that I maintain a strong focus on the curriculum and for which I provide supplementary materials. The materials I have developed are not only class and student specific as to interest and level of proficiency in English, but also reinforce the lessons being taught in the approved curriculum.
As my resume indicates, I have had many jobs that align with this position. For example, in my position at Central Falls High school, I worked with other professionals to establish an ESL curriculum that would be standards-driven, in order to fulfill the requirements for school accreditation. During the school accreditation process, I was chosen to speak to the members of the accreditation committee and answer question regarding the ESL department and the school.
At Mount Hope Neighborhood Association, I won a grant for a program for education and job development for adult learners. As director, I wrote the curriculum, hired and supervised the staff of teachers and wrote reports detailing our successes.
When I was hired as a GED teacher at Opportunities Industrial Center, I worked to develop curriculum for the ESL and GED programs by tailoring the existing structure to individual students, writing specialized lessons plans based on each learner’s needs and abilities. While at OIC, I was quickly promoted from the classroom to be the face of the program around the country. I presented workshops and spoke at conferences about the work we did.
I have worked at various educational institutions, and have held varied positions in ESL and English. I have had the pleasure of working with many people from diverse populations. I believe that my students are successful because we all contribute to the learning process; it is important that each student feels that his or her life experiences are of value to the class and to everyone’s learning process.
Finally, I believe most people find me as someone who is highly adaptable and possesses a teaching style that is approachable. I am a well-seasoned teacher of ESL and English and have a Life-time teaching certificate from the state of Rhode Island in English and ESL. I am also an adjunct instructor of English at both New England Institute of Technology and the Community College of RI. If I am hired for this position, I will bring a wealth of skills and techniques enabling students to acquire the English language.
I look forward to hearing from you, and would enjoy discussing more of my teaching successes. Please feel free to call me (401) 862-4789 or email me (genevaurquhart@gmail.com) at your convenience.
Thank you for your time and consideration, with best regards.
Sincerely,
Geneva Urquhart
