Experience Summary
I have worked with elementary age children since 1997 when I earned my Elementary Education Degree. I substituted in every school in the Fairbanks Northstar Borough School District except Joy Elementary. I held several long term substitute teacher jobs as well as 4 years holding a building substitute position. 5 years ago I secured a full time 1st grade position at Weller Elementary moving to Third Grade this year. During the time of my building substitute positions I also held an afterschool tutoring position at Ladd Elementary for 2 years. Before I started in teaching with FNSBSD, I worked at Play 'N Learn when it was housed at Pearl Creek Elementary for the afterschool program there.
Teaching Style
I believe kids learn best through natural processes in real life situations. In a larger classroom where it is much more difficult to be able to provide that, I create an atmosphere that simulates real life as much as possible. I am gentle and understanding but also strict and down to business when needed. I try to gauge what a child most needs in the moment just as I do in other relationships in my life. While children are not just mini adults, they do have a lot of the same human issues we all have. So I take into consideration the whole child and plan accordingly. I still teach the basics.I believe the foundations of simple straightforward old fashioned basics are the keys to building to deeper learning. I teach with patience and hope and a love for seeing learning grow.
