Experience Summary
I have been teaching the SAT for the past 12 years [part time]. For the first five years I was an classroom instructor for Studyworks, Inc. [competitor of Kaplan and Princeton]. When Studyworks left California, I continued by tutoring the brothers and sisters of my classroom students. I started in the teaching field by instructing Vietnamese how to speak English in French. I spent another five years teaching aircraft systems and serving as an instructor pilot in the Air Force.
Teaching Style
In contrast to many of the other tutors, I would not presume to even imply that I could teach your student either math or English in a few hours of tutoring. What I can do is teach your student to be very 'test wise', teach them some easily applied techniques that will get them successfully past most of the math/geometry problems, teach them how to use the grading bias to score well on a less than stellar composition, and teach them how to find the 'key' to the reading comprehension questions.
Other Comments
I don't adjust my teaching style to every student but I do adjust the level of instruction to meet the needs of the student. For example, if the student is advanced, I concentrate on the 4 & 5 level questions with receiving a scholarship in mind. If the student is an under achiever, I ignore the few 5 level questions and focus on the 1-3 level questions that are well within the student's ability which, if all correct, will result in a very satisfactory score.
