Other Comments

I beleive that education is a triangle that involves the student, parent, and teacher, and the additonal help of a tutor is always a plus. a tutor can cheer your child on and reinforce with the child and their parents all the wonderful traits and qualities that they possess and it can truly be a life changing experience that brings about hope and confidence. In this day and age, with all the stringent requirements that are required of a child, I believe that a competent tutro can help the child realize the ways they learn best and hone in on skills they want to perfect and conquer those subjects that appear to be a challenge. To summarize this thought, I think students need tutors whether they are struggling or need to be challenged!

Subject Commentary

Basic Learning Skills This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
An excellent tutor for teaching Basic Learning Skills. One must have the basics in order to succeed. I teach your child through their individual learning style. I can test your child to discover which way he or she learns best and then go from there! I am a firm believer that a student must build a "strong foundation" when it comes to becoming a successful lifelong learner. Once a strong foundations of the basics are built it's then that students are surrounded by the strong walls of their house to continue down the path for "life-long learning!"
Elementary Proficiency: Expert
I have taught with the Oklahoma Public School system for 25 years, so I'm very well trained to teach the five pillars of Reading: Phonics: Phonemic Awareness, Vocabulary, Fluency, Comprehension and Writing. If your child is struggling in passing the DIBELs-Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Learning, the BEAR-Basic Early Assessments of Reading or Literacy First Test requirements at their school. I can be a tremendous help to your child. I have been interventionist for a number of years and have had much success with my students in helping them to become competent in all areas which helps their competencies across the curriculum. Reading is the one subject that is incorporated into all subjects!
Elementary Grammar Proficiency: Expert
Grammar exercises are completed during small intervention groups. Kids need to know when to use capitalization and end of sentence punctuation. I find that authentic writing works best with grammar. It always makes a lasting impression if the students can discover the mistakes while writing. This way they transfer what they are learning into everyday life.
Elementary Math Proficiency: I know the basics
When I teach Math I make sure your child learns the basic skills: addition, subtraction multiplication, telling time, and understanding word problems. The student learns Math vocabulary terms and are better able to understand word problems because they know they understand the terms. They are also able to verbalize or write how they got their answer. I'm very good at building self-confidence if your child is intimidated by numbers.
Elementary Phonics Proficiency: Expert
The past 25 years I have beenn teaching Reading, Language and Arts in the Oklahoma Public School System. I have a Reading Specialist Certificate and have taught small group interventions (5-6 students) which involved reinforcement with phonics skills: synonyms, antonyms, homophones, homonyms, pronunciation of letter sounds, identification of vowels,, consonants, vowel pals, and have worked a lot with English as a Second Language Students to help them learn the English language.
Elementary Reading Proficiency: Expert
Comprehension and Fluency are very important to be successful in Reading. There are many strategies to help with comprehension such as identifying Literacy Elements, Sequencing and understanding Cause and Effect and Time Lines. When I teach non-fiction, this when we are covering an informational piece we often complete a KWL Chart. This stands for What You Know, What You Would Like to Know and What You Have Learned. The child relates what they already know about which builds background knowledge.
Elementary Science Proficiency: I know the basics
Elementary Science and teaching is the basics and you will find "Science" in all reading materials. I like to make the subject applicable to the student by providing them an opportunity to do a hands-on-type activity. After they complete the activity they are given an opportunity to reflect and journal about what they have learned and how this can be applied to everyday life!
Elementary Social Studies Proficiency: Experienced
Social Studies is found in every text we read. I enjoy teaching students geography, different cultures, Oklahoma history, and background of the United States. I believe in patriotism of our country and teaching values, morals, and respect. In order to appreciate the world in which we live a student must understand the past, present and the future history and how it applies to our everyday life. Overall all we learn together to appreciate our differences in a mult-cultural society.
Elementary Study Skills Proficiency: Experienced
I have spent the past 25 years in the Oklahoma Public School System and have spent much of this time helping kids know how to prepare for tests and feel confident about their knowledge. I have a lot of resources for kindergarten through Sixth grade on how to make sure students do well on the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Learning Skills, Literacy First Test, and for grades third and fourth how to be prepared for the Oklahoma Core Curriculum Tests.
Elementary Vocabulary Proficiency: Expert
Vocabulary is the key to understanding what you read. For English Language Learners, I use a lot of Visuals. If they understand the lexicon of the word, the antonym, synonym prefixes, suffixes and the parts of speech, the student will have an excellent understanding of the world. I believe in allowing kids to make words by using letter cards and then using the words they make into a sentence. I think Vocabulary games are very fun for the students.
Test Preparation This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
An excellent tutor for bringing struggling readers up to grade level and challenging gifted and students to their fullest potential. I can make sure your child is on a third grade level and also can make sure they are prepared for the Oklahoma Core Curriculum Test given in the Spring.
Testing Skills This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
An excellent tutor in preparing your child to succeed on classroom tests through preparation and ways to take prepare themselves mentally, physically and emotionally for the big test day! Your child will actually look forward to being tested!
Testing Strategies Proficiency: Expert
Teaching testing strategies is my forte. I'm an excellent tutor for teaching strategies for your child to be successful for any test. I have a vast array of strategies to share with your child.
