Experience Summary

As an educator, I view myself not as a provider of knowledge, but rather as a facilitator. I aim to encourage the critical thinking that will serve students not only in the classroom, but throughout their lives. In my experience, I have become well-versed in student-centered curriculum development programs, including Understanding by Design, which I have employed extensively in my own lesson planning with gratifying results. I have also been trained in, and have been implementing, the new Common Core Standards for over a year. My student teaching and observations in New York City public schools as well as my current tenured position in an inner city school district have provided me with valuable exposure to diverse classroom atmospheres and have allowed me to develop effective classroom management strategies. This range of both academic and practical classroom experience lends a balance to my instructional abilities that will prove to be beneficial to the evolving social climate of our world. I fully maintain that in order to effectively teach in a content area, an educator must fully immerse himself in it. As an avid reader and writer, I have cultivated a passion for English language and literature. As a result of my first-hand experiences, I can teach with the sincerity necessary to encourage my students to embrace them as well. Teaching Style

Holding active NYS certifications in both English and Literacy has had a tremendous impact on the way I teach. I find myself much better able to engage struggling students. Quite often, particularly when it comes to reading, it is the lack of basic comprehension skills that prevent students from being able to fully engage with a text and to perform critical thinking tasks. My experience in diagnosing and instructing students at various stages and abilities of literacy acquisition has helped me garner a talent for overcoming this challenge, and propelling students into higher order thinking.

My Hobbies

I am an avid writer of both prose and poetry. I am currently working on my first book, a memoir, and hope to be published within the next year.
