About Me

Experience Summary

My teaching motto is: Learning is fun. You can achieve anything you set your mind to. Hello! I became a teacher in 2003 after spending several years in Retail Management. Although I loved the challenge and fast pace of working in retail, I didn't really feel as though I was making a huge difference in anyone's life by having retail as a career. So, I decided that I would return to school and pursue a degree in something that did make a difference in others' lives. I had always wanted to be a teacher from the time I was a little girl, as my teachers all had a profound effect on my life and I wanted to pass on that effect to other kids who may be struggling in school as I once did. This is nothing more gratifying to me than to see my student's knowledge grow and thrive. I love the moment the student says "a-ha" :) . I am a very thorough teacher who is always making sure that what I teach is understood by my student's. I am constantly reviewing what went right or could be improved upon when I teach. I truly believe that learning really can be fun. I make sure of it ! I love to use games as teaching tools as well as manipulatives, the five senses and personal learning styles to adapt my lessons to fit the learner. I also like to do a lot of hands-on activities. When a student experiences something first hand, it is more likely to make an impact on their direct knowledge. Since receiving my Master's degree in 2003, I have worked as a teacher's assistant, 3rd grade classroom teacher, taught Preschoolers, grades K-2,4,5,6,7 and 8. All of these experiences have been unique in their own ways. I have been fortunate enough to be able to teach across many different settings as well. During this time I have continued to tutor students that qualify for supplemental education services and also on a one-to-one private basis. At this point, I tutor for my local school district and have also been tutoring for a learning service for the past 6 years or so. I recently earned National Tutoring Association certification as well. I truly love what I do and have been working on a part-time basis the past few years so I can be home with my 4 year old daughter who has some special needs. I have always believed that you can achieve anything you set your mind to. My daughter truly keep this fact in perspective for me on a daily basis. I hope that I can be a fit for you or your student's needs!

Subject Commentary

Elementary Proficiency: Expert
An Elementary school teacher works with students and helps them learn concepts in subjects such as science, mathematics, language arts, social studies, art and music. It is the teacher's job to help students apply these concepts in a real-world context. I have 9 years experience as an Elementary school teacher. I have worked in both urban and suburban settings with students that have had varying needs. I employ many learning strategies such as differentiated instruction so that I may meet the learner where their knowledge currently is. Learning styles are very important and I believe in choice of assignment when possible.
Elementary Math This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Experienced
As an elementary math teacher, I have actively instructed students, created lesson plans, assigned and corrected homework, managed students in the classroom, communicated with parents and helped students prepare for standardized testing. As a math teacher, my job duties can vary significantly between elementary school and higher grade levels. In elementary school, the mastery of basic skills is of paramount importance. This is my primary focus as once the basic skills are mastered it becomes much easier for the student to master any new skills that are introduced.
Elementary Reading This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Experienced
As a reading teacher, I have been responsible for teaching the basics of reading and literacy awareness to young children, ranging from the proper way to hold a book to alphabet identification and correct word pronunciation.
Elementary Study Skills Proficiency: Expert
Teaching students to use study skills and strategies effectively to transform these students into independent learners. I have worked as an After School Test Prep teacher. I took on this role at the same time that I taught third grade during the school day. One of my main responsibilities was teaching students test-taking/study skills that they could apply when taking the NYS ELA and Math exams.
