Experience Summary

My experience with the German language occupies the past 12 years of my life. I began learning the language when I was 11 years old and had moved to Germany because my parents were employed by the U.S. Air Force. Now, 12 years later, I have a Bachelors and Masters in German, two years of teaching experience in German, and also private tutoring experience on the side. While in Germany, I was constantly immersed in the German culture and economy, and made many German, Austrian, and Swiss friends with whom I spoke German daily. With this experience, I not only solidified my general fluency, but I also came into close contact with German slang and colloquial speech-- Because formally taught "High German" is often absent or clipped in the everyday speech of most German speakers, this kind of language experience was essential in building the comprehension skills necessary to really understand the nuances of the German language. During the past two years (2011-2013) I had the opportunity to teach German at the university level in Boulder, CO. I planned lessons, created original materials, utilized authentic German resources, evaluated students with examinations and proficiency benchmarks, and handled all the responsibilities of a university instructor while adding my own personal touch. During my years of teaching, I learned the significance of each learner preferring his/her personal learning styles, be it visual, auditory, emotional, kinesthetic, etc. Through pedagogical theory and hands-on training provided by the University of Colorado, I further honed my teaching skills in my second year at the university, becoming the Lead Teaching Assistant and helping develop first year Teaching Assistants into effective teachers. My experience speaks for itself-- I've got the course ratings and instructor (*me) ratings to back up my effectiveness in German instruction. I am a U.S.-born American citizen, but, due to my childhood status as a military brat, spent 10 total years in Germany. During my time there, I immersed myself in the language and in the culture, even spending one year of my undergraduate studies at a German university. I extended my knowledge of German at the university (The University of the South, The University of Colorado) and now hold a Bachelor's and a Master's in German. I also have two years of formal university-level teaching experience as a teaching assistant at CU Boulder.
