Experience Summary
I really enjoy teaching students and working with them one-on-one. I have nine years of experience teaching preschool and kindergarten, at both public and private schools. I just received my Master's degree in Reading Education from Towson University, which gave me the opportunity to develop my skills in individualized instruction.
I studied guided reading, literacy in the content areas, individualized literacy instruction, and other areas during my Master’s in Reading Specialty program at Towson University. I have experience assessing students, grouping student flexibly, and planning engaging, as well as effective, instruction.
Teaching Style
I believe in a play-based approach to teaching new concepts. My approach to teaching is to generate excitement over learning, which I believe helps cement ideas in young children’s heads. In my early literacy lessons, I play games like "The 3 Strikes Game" or "Backwards Hangman" to reinforce phonics skills. The students enjoy the opportunity to beat me by making strong sound-letter connections.
I have experience teaching drama to all different age groups and I use drama games and experiences in my pre-K classroom. When we learn about Martin Luther King, Jr. and the bus boycotts, we act out the experiences of the people in that situation, giving my students a unique understanding of their circumstances. During a unit on fall, students take an "Imagination Walk," to imagine what it would be like to be an apple made into apple pie. My focus in the classroom is on teaching early academic concepts through whole group experiences and hands-on lessons, as well as exploring different kinds of sensory materials and art medium.
