Experience Summary
After six years of social work experience as a caseworker for Westchester County Department of Social Services where I worked extensively with families and children with special needs, I returned to college to receive my Master's degree in Library and Information Science. In 1978 I started my librarian career at the New York State Library, as a reference librarian specializing in the humanities, social sciences and legal research. I soon became coordinator of staff training (for a staff of over 200), both organizing and teaching classes in many subjects, and was liason with the New York State Data Center and Census Bureau. My interest and love of teaching and working with people led to having responsibility for overseeing the SUNY internship program, providing guidance and training to students. I also had a role as Chair of numerous committees, including disability awareness and ergonomics.
Teaching Style
Patient and kind...I like to set specific goals but always encourage creative and imaginative ideas and ways of expression. I can be firm when needed but also like to bring a sense of humor into play, so to speak.
My Hobbies
Writing (poetry, journals, extensive personal correspondence), reading, Swedish baking, travel, cooking.
ADD/ADHD |
Proficiency: I know the basics
|
Before becoming a Certified Public Librarian, I greatly enjoyed working with children of all ages with different abilities in several acclaimed summer recreation camps and art class settings. More recently, I have worked with ADD/ADHD children who need assistance in reading, support in concentration, and coordination in reaching goals. |
Composition |
This is one of my top subjects!
Proficiency: Expert
|
As a professional librarian with a major in English and American literature, I have extensive experience in writing and composition. This includes writing poetry (from age six) and short stories, journals, educational guides used in staff training at the NYS Library, and grant applications. As a parent I provided many innovative opportunities for my daughter to explore and succeed in creative writing and fundamental composition from an early age. |
Creative Writing |
This is one of my top subjects!
Proficiency: Expert
|
My career as a librarian and my experience as a parent provided many opportunities for me to use creative writing skills to write in many areas- including poetry (including embroidering original poetry in wall hangings!)and using artistic techniques to inspire imagination with children in developing their writing skills. |
