About Me

Experience Summary

I began teaching in 1976 in Tarboro, NC. My first teaching experience was in the middle school, grade 8. After that year, I taught fourth grade for 6 years. My next assignment was teaching at a junior high school grade 8 Language Arts, and grade 9 Basic English, and Diagnostic and Prescriptive Reading. This was followed by teaching middle school grade 6 for 5 years. After completing my Masters in Reading, I worked with the UNC-Chapel Hill Professional Development School supervising graduate students in Guidance, Psychology, and Education as well as teaching At-Risk readers in grades 1 and 2. The rest of my career was teaching Title 1 and ALP II in Wake County, and over 7 years grades 1 to 5, all content areas, in Durham County.

Teaching Style

My teaching style is very flexible depending on the student. I select programs which best fits the student, rather than forcing a student into a specific program that I prefer. My expectations are high for each student. When the expectations are set high, students tend to reach to meet these expectations. Thus it "stretches" each child to reach their maximum potential.

My Hobbies

Currently I enjoy reading, walking, and spending time with my grandchildren. When time allows, I enjoy traveling and visiting historical sites.

Other Comments

I enjoy having learning fun with my students, yet I am very serious about their successful academic achievement. It is my desire to work with the parents, teachers, and students to develop a successful IEP for each student. The goals of the IEP will align with the school curriculum focusing on the strengths of the student while improving the areas of concerns and weaknesses.
