About Me

Experience Summary

I've worked as an Economist at the United States International Trade Commission in Washington, D.C. As part of my job, I traveled to Geneva, Switzerland, Brussels, Belgium, Mexico City, Mexico and San Juan, Puerto Rico to conduct interviews with local officials and business people concerning the United States’ international trade agreements. Using this information, Susan updated the annual Trade Agreements publications relating to the General Agreement of Trade and Tariffs (now the World Trade Organization), the European Union, the Free-Trade Agreement with Mexico, and the Caribbean Initiative. I decided upon a career change and began teaching. My specialties were Macro, Micro and International Economics, Introduction to Business, and Business Applications Software. She taught at the Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, North Carolina, the Northern Virginia Community College in Manassas, Virginia, and the College of Southern Maryland, in La Plata, Maryland. Combining my economics expertise and teaching theories, I became the Economic Development Officer for the Tri-County Council for Southern Maryland. The Council is the regional economic development organization for the counties of Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s. The Council Board is composed of all the elected local and state officials in the region. As the Economic Development Officer, I worked with the county Economic Development Directors, Executive Directors of the chambers, military alliances, technology council representatives, various State agencies, public education personnel, and businesses to coordinate and facilitate regional projects that enhanced the region as a place to work, live and play. Starting in August 2004, I was by the Census and Economic Information Center, Montana Department of Commerce as the Senior Research Economist. In anticipation of the 2009 Legislative session, I prepared economic benefit reports for the Workforce Training, the Big Sky Trust Fund and the Community Development Block Grant “ Economic Development programs. As part of the five-year Consolidated Housing Plan prepared by the Housing Division, I also prepared the Economic Profile and Demographic Analysis reports. To better understand the economies of the seven Indian reservations, Susan undertook the task of creating the Montana Indian Business Directory for Montana Indian Business Alliance. I also developed presentations on ways to analyze the Indian Reservation economies since little data exists.

Teaching Style

I believe in 'learning by doing' method of teaching. I also prefer essay exams where students have to explain their answers. I also encourage student discussions, working in teams, and smart research on the Internet
