Experience Summary
I have been a special education teacher for 26 years with the Davidson County Schools. I have taught all grade levels from kindergarten through high school. I am currently a teacher at South Davidson High School in Denton, NC. I have worked in self-contained and resource classrooms; however, most of my experience has been in the inclusion classrooms with a co-teaching setting. I have taught language arts and English for all of my 26 years in the education field. I currently serve high school students, both special needs students and non-special needs students, in English grades 9-12. English is my passion, especially literature, and I enjoy bringing it into the lives of students. I also assist in math and foreigh language (Spanish). I am proficent in Microsooft Word, Powerpoint, Smartboard, and document camera usage as well as the Graduation Project process.
Teaching Style
I have to first find the learning style of the student. As a teacher, I find that students have diverse ways of learning and that I must adapt my teaching style to their needs. For instance, I have some students who are auditory learners and sometimes retain information more if information is read orally to them. Some students must have a generous amount of explanation as to the content of what he or she is reading while otheers require many visual cues to accompany their learning. It really depends upon the student.
My Hobbies
I love to read. I read the classics, autobiographies, and mysteries. I love to cook and collect cookbooks. I am an animal lover-I currently have three dogs and have had other pets such as lizards, squirrels, skunks, raccoons, birds, cats, and a tarantula. I enjoy bowling and fishing. I love to watch movies, especially action and film noir. I love to spend time with my family. I also work with our high school marcing band as the colorguard instructor.
Other Comments
I am patient, honest, and trustworthy. I believe all children have the ability to learn and should be given the opportunity to do so. I treat all students I encounter as I would have expected someone else to treat my son, which, by the way, I am a mother to a 26-year-old.
