Experience Summary
American Sign Language has been a profound influence in my life. It began as a sophomore in high school, for my junior and senior year my teacher was deaf. My skills improved rapidly when I was called to serve for two years in the deaf community in CA.
Just prior I was called to learn this subject and a language learning institute for ten weeks. In the city of Fremont CA was the deaf institute where I labored for nearly two years. Due to its reputation and richness in deaf culture students from all over the world attended this school.
I was fortunate to learn the language there in nearly all of its accents and dialects. I was also assigned to work with deaf people as partners. In addition I have several hundred hours of interpreting in the religion, business, and education settings. I know I will be of great help to those who assign me as their tutor and together we can learn, explore, and gain better understanding of this unique and beautiful language.
Teaching Style
I like to take a "Pimsluer" approach to learning languages, meaning it's not how many words you know. Rather it's using what you know and making the most of it. All the while consistently seeking for opportunities to learn ASL by simply conversing with natives. I'm hoping as a tutor we can continue enriching ourselves in this great language and gain greater in depths into this subject
