Experience Summary
I am currently a PhD candidate in Mathematics at Purdue University, Indiana. I have just moved to the New York City as my wife accepted a faculty position at St Johns University. In Fall 2012, I will be Adjunct Instructor at St Johns University on a course about Math education. I am a permanent residence of the US.
Tutoring has always been one of my interests. I love helping students understanding Mathematics. Ever since I was a high school student, I began to tutor lower-grade students. I tutored students from elementary to high schools. One of which I spent three years with him, helping him improve performance in Math continuously over time. In addition to helping students understanding Math, I also teach them skills in preparing examination. I constantly monitor students' progress in the course and devise plans for the studying for the exam. It had helped students progressing in their course according to my past experience.
Since I came the US, I was not able to tutor students privately due to visa issues. However, I was a recitation instructor for two and a half year and an instructor for another two and a half year. I spent a lot of hours in helping my students in my office and Math help room. I had tutored two undergraduate students at Purdue since I received my Green Card last year.
Teaching Style
I believe that Mathematics is everyone, not just the A-students. I believe that through serious work and external help, everyone can achieve success in a Mathematics. Ever since I was a teaching assistant in College, I always pay special attention to students who have difficulty in the course. For my past experience in tutoring, most of the students I dealt with are the one struggling in their Math course.
I love asking students questions which lead them to understanding the problem solving procedure. Instead of directly feeding the material to student I want to understand what the student is struggle and from where he/she began to have problems understanding. Besides, understanding Math and doing homework, I help students by discussing study plans with students and encourage them (and monitor them) to follow the plan to achieve success in test and exam.
My Hobbies
Travelling - I have been to China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Spain, France, Italy and all around in the US. And I love to talk about my travelling experience with students.
