12 years as a teacher, beginning with 11 years teaching chess, English and Spanish at St Louis Priory High School in St Louis. Missouri State Champion 1991 and member of National Championship team 1991. Experienced tournament chess player and coach for 20 years, barrettchess@gmail.com. Have worked with students both online and in the classroom through barrettchess.com. Have been teaching chess for the past year in numerous schools in the Twin Cities Area. Studied chess and learned teaching techniques with National Master Charles Lawton, Fide Master Sasa Jevtic, International Master Renier Castellanos and International Master Vojislav Milanovic. Currently President of Discover Chess, based in St Louis and an instructor with Twin Cities Chess Club in Minneapolis / St Paul. From a language perspective, studied in Mexico (Morelia, Baden-Powell Institute) and Spain (Saint Louis University). Traveled to Spain almost annually for 15 years and lived with host families in both Mexico and Spain for several summers. As an English teacher, focused primarily on poetry from 17th Century to present (Shakespeare, Burns, Keats, Poe, Tennyson, Whitman, Frost, Owen, Bukowski, Collins, et al) American novels (Jack London and Harper Lee, John Steinbeck and F. Scott Fitzgerald) and Shakespeare (Julius Caesar, Hamlet, Othello and Much Ado About Nothing being the primary texts).
