About Me

Testing Skills TutoringOne of my top subjects! This is one of my top subjects!

I don't approve of "teaching to the test" but there is a definite method to being a successful test taker. Wheter it's weekly spelling, multiplication tables, states and their capitals, or the dreaded end-of-grade or end-of-course, I can coach you on strategies that are proven to help you perform better.

Experience Summary

As mentioned in my earlier description, I have eighteen years experience as an educator. I have taught students of all ages from early childhood through college and non-traditional adult education. I believe in making learning fun and engaging by relating concepts to points of interest for the individual student.

Teaching Style

Tutoring differs from teaching in that "style" is replaced by method. Some of the methods I have used in the past are rhythm and music, neumonic devices, and of course, drill and practice. I have been told that I am gifted with presenting material in novel ways.

My Hobbies

My hobbies include reading, fishing, and spending time with my sons.

Subject Commentary

ADD/ADHD Proficiency: Expert
Many of the special education teachers requested that their students be placed in my homeroom because of my success in dealing with "challenging" kids. My oldest son has ADHD and he is an honor roll student.
Basic Learning Skills This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
My certifications are Elementary Education K-6, Education Administration K-12, and Early Childhood Education level II. My experience includes classroom teacher grades K, 3, 4,& 5 (Brunswick County Schools); GED preparation and remediation (Western Piedmont Community College); Summer Program and School-Age Coordinaor (For Kids Only Child Development Center); instructor for Introduction to Education (UNCW and Western Piedmont), and private tutoring-students ranging from early elementary school through college.
Composition Proficiency: Expert
I was an English major in college and writing is one of my passions. When teaching 4th grade, narrative writing was one of my favorite things to teach, and it showed in my students' performance.
Elementary Math This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
When I was teaching, my students consistently scored well on end-of grade tests, and during my time as an educator I have taught summer school or remedial math for seven years. A former superintendent commented that I was the best elementary math teacher he had ever seen.
GED Proficiency: Expert
I taught GED prep to inmates at Foothills Correctional Institution in Morganton, NC. I am proud to say that even though I only worked there for just under a year, that I saw 3 of my students graduate.
Hearing Impaired Proficiency: Experienced
I know some sign language and have had students who are hearing impaired in my class room in the past.
Shakespeare Proficiency: Expert
I love Shakespeare and have read and written various responses aboutmany of works. My approach to classical literature would make this fun for me and my student.
Special Education Proficiency: Expert
I am well-versed in Responses to Interventions and have served many special needs students during my career. I have experience in working with students daignosed with Autism, Aspberger's, Downs, ADHD, and other "labels", but I am not certified in Special Education. We can discuss your specific situation to see if I would meet your needs.
Study Skills Proficiency: Expert
Lots of people just don't know how to study, and coincidentally, these same people often have difficulty with organization. I can help you or your struggling student with both.
