About Me

Experience Summary

I have been hired recently to teach Creative Writing, Reading and Math in late November. I've also been employed as a TAKS tutor in the EPISD, middle school level working with ELL learners, regular program and special education students. I've student taught in at a 4th and 5th grade level, all subjects. I've also been a pre-school teacher with approximately 27 credits in Early Childhood Education. I am also a parent of a student with special needs, so I've always helped my son with his homework since he was very young. He was diagnosed with a severe to moderate learning disability and also had a speech delay. I was also an elected Local School Council Parent Rep in Chicago and served a 2 year term.

Teaching Style

Utilizing multiple intelligences to aid in tutoring students is important to helping all students improve their skills in all disciplines. Patience, perseverance and a sense of humor along with supporting not only the student, but the family is very important. Tutoring is a way to address the specific needs of the student when it's not possible to do one on one teaching sessions when the student needs more time on task.

My Hobbies

Art, creative writing, listening to music, learning a new language and baking.

Subject Commentary

Basic Learning Skills This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Experienced
My degree is in Elementary Education. I was also a pre-school teacher for approximately 2 years, so I am familiar with pre-writing skills to the elementary level. I've also taught all subjects in the 4th and 5th grade level, such as math, science, guided reading, writing and social studies.
Creative Writing This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Experienced
This is one of the subjects I love to teach. I will begin to tutor in this subject in late November and I'm excited because this is a subject that is fun and allows students to be as creative as they like.
Elementary Grammar Proficiency: Experienced
My degree is in Elementary Education. Grammar is an important part of learning to express oneself and I've worked with many ELL students as well as special education students to improve their grammar skills.
Elementary Phonics Proficiency: Experienced
Learning phonics is one of the most challenging aspects of learning to read in English because it's very different from learning to read in Spanish, where almost everything is written just as it sounds. It's very frustrating for ELL students as well as special education students and it requires gentile guidance as well as frequent review. Voluntary reading helps many students stay interested in learning.
Elementary Reading Proficiency: I know the basics
My degree is in Elementary Education. I have experience teaching guided reading in a first grade dual language classroom and at the 4th and 5th grade level.
English Proficiency: I know the basics
English is my first language and I enjoy the subject, but I love creative writing more. I'm more familiar with pre-school and elementary literature and basic semantics and syntax.
English ESOL Proficiency: Experienced
I've tutored ELL learners (mainly Spanish speaking) in both elementary schools in Las Cruces and Sunland Park New Mexico. I've also enjoyed working in the EPISD district last semester as a TAKS tutor, working with ELL learners as well as special education students. English is my first language, Spanish is my second language.
Reading Proficiency: I know the basics
I'm also a former pre-school teacher, so I have experience teaching basic letter recognition and phonics from a pre-school level to elementary level.
Reading Comprehension Proficiency: Experienced
I worked as a TAKS tutor in the El Paso Independent School District last semester. I enjoyed working with middle school students on their reading comprehension skills.
Spanish Proficiency: I know the basics
Spanish is my second language so it comes in handy when tutoring ELL students. I can also tutor non-native Spanish speakers as well as monolingual English speakers as well. I can read, write and speak Spanish.
Special Education This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Experienced
I am a parent of a special education student myself. First and foremost, one has to be a compassionate and patient person when working with students who learn differently. Perseverance and a sense of humor is key to helping every student learn, along with positive feedback to both students and their families. I can't express how important it is to have a supportive teacher work with the student and their families. The methods that work for special education students work for everyone - regular students as well as ELL students. I heard someone say "if our students can't learn the way we teach, then we must learn to teach the way they learn". I couldn't agree more. My son has a moderate to severe learning disability and also had a speech delay. I initiated his evaluation process and he was enrolled in a developmental kindergarten at the age of 3 and a half. He is a high school graduate and I've currently tutored him in driving, so he has finally passed the written part of his driver's test after many attempts. I paid for private tutoring and worked with his teacher. It was an investment that was well worth the money. She was great, very compassionate and I'm very grateful to her for helping my son achieve his goal.
