Experience:
I have over 20 years of teacher and tutoring experience and I continue to love showing kids how to learn. My major subjects of expertise include Spanish, Reading (Decoding and fluency) and GED. (English, Grammar, Social Studies) I also have recently begun a part-time job in which I tutor children with special needs in a Hebrew School Program (Decoding and social skills). I have worked with students with various, skills and abilities, and students from a variety of cultural backgrounds.I have worked with gifted students, students with Dyslexia and/or high-level autism, Asperger's, PDD, ADHD, language processing disorders, Tourette's and students with social and emotional issues. I am very passionate about teaching and I will do all that is necessary to make sure that each child has a positive and life-long learning experience.
Teaching Style
I teach according to the style that best works for the child, and I take the first couple of tutoring sessions to figure out a child's strengths, weaknesses, interests, and most effective learning style. Regardless of style, however, I believe that a multisensory approach to teaching is best for a child, as it allows teachers to tap into areas of strength of which the student may not be aware. I feel that it is essential to develop a strong rapport with a student in order for positive learning to take place. I also make sure that when I teach a specific subject that I have all the knowledge and tools that are necessary to develop a child's maximum learning potential, and if I feel I need more tools and knowledge, I delve into additional resources. I work as a team player with the student, parent, and any other person who the parent wishes to involve in order to take into account the child's best interests.
My Hobbies
Reading, Singing, Songwriting, Cooking. At the Norman Howard School, (2001-2011) I spent 10 years serving as Coordinator and Advisor for the after-school Multicultural Club, where students with special needs had an opportunity to learn about different cultures while cooking and eating several ethnic delights. The club 's activities gave students a chance to take risks outside their comfort areas, and helped to develop friendships and a strong sense of community.
Other Comments
