Experience Summary
As a student, I loved school so much so that I went on to get a graduate degree in science. Science and writing have been huge parts of my professional career (non-tutoring) and I have worked with government research entities, an environmental consulting company and now with a non-profit that focuses on public education and outreach. My specialties are two-fold: 1) I have an extensive science background and the ability to share this in an effective way with kids; biology was my favorite course in college and I love to revisit it; 2) I have personal and professional experience working with kids of all ages that are having difficulty getting what they need out of the classroom.
Teaching Style
My approach to tutoring is that all students want to learn, even if they act otherwise. It is my job to make the subject more relevant, interesting and understandable for them. I assume everyone is capable of learning the material and try different ways of introducing and reinforcing information until it sinks in. I believe parents have a hard enough job, and it is sometimes best for someone else to tackle school subjects where the kids are not thriving. Kids often benefit from a fresh perspective and if their self-esteem is at all suffering from difficulties at school, having a new person involved in their lives can help them feel more confident again.
