Experience Summary
I am a retired statistician, with degrees in physics, aeronautical engineering and business. The following is a summary of my tutoring experience:
As a student at M.I.T., I designed and taught a 6-week class on "Airplanes and Space Flight" to area high school students at "M.I.T. High School."
When my sons were in middle school, I designed and taught a 6-session course on Statistics to 10 students.
I provided group tutoring in pre-algebra and algebra to students at a private school in Virginia.
I tutored math and physics at The Tutor Center in Loveland, the Larimer County Workforce Center, and the Thompson School District.
I will be teaching an enrichment course on statistical literacy to senior citizens in Larimer County.
Teaching Style
I am particularly adept at explaining mathematical concepts and techniques to students.
I find a way to build on what the student already knows. I find a way to explain a technique based on what the student already knows how to do.
If a student does not know how to solve a problem, then I will show the student how I solve the problem, explaining my thinking and results as I go along. Then, I give the student a blank sheet of paper and they have to do the problem all by themselves. I may also change the problem a little and have them do it again to practice the technique.
