Experience Summary
My 20+ year teaching career began in high school when I ran an after-school tutoring program. At the University of Georgia I tutored for the chemistry and biology departments. I earned a BS in Genetics and a Masters of Education. I taught biology, physical science, ecology, and human anatomy in 2 public high schools in Georgia. I was nominated Teacher of the Year and earned the Georgia Science Teacher of Promise Award.
Since then I have tutored math, science, reading, and test prep for grades 5-12 and college. I have recently renewed my Georgia Teaching Certificate for grades PK-5 and 7-12.
Teaching Style
I am very much a hands-on instructor. Long ago, I heard the Chinese Proverb “I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.” These words embody my personal teaching philosophy. I utilize a varied and balanced set of teaching strategies that will meet the needs of all types of learners. First, I determine the student’s preferred learning style (auditory, visual, or kinesthetic) and tailor my lessons accordingly. I then try as much as possible to make our lessons as relatable to the student’s likes and interests. Let’s face it, when the work is difficult and doesn’t relate to anything practical… what’s the point? When I am able to incorporate real-world examples and applications, students respond and things start to click!
