Experience Summary
I am an accountant by occupation, and my tutoring experience is primarily as a volunteer, because I love learning and helping others to learn. I gave beginning piano and music theory instruction to a student who went on to become a professional flutist. I also taught beginning piano and music theory lessons to my neighbor's son, who went on to learn violin and recently guest conducted at his high school orchestra concert. As a volunteer at the New Brighton Community Education Center, I provided weekly Basic Reading and ESL tutoring. As a long-time volunteer for the Center for Victims of Torture, I assisted clients with filling out job and other applications and with practice in conversational English.
Teaching Style
My teaching style is mentoring, or sharing of knowledge, in combination with promoting the understanding of consequences. I strongly believe that learning can and should be an enjoyable experience for student, teacher and any other involved parties, such as parents. While some subjects may require rote memorization, I always try to explain the underlying reason, purpose and benefit of the material being taught. I also recognize the importance of listening and understanding the student's learning style in order to most effectively and efficiently obtain the desired learning outcome.
