Experience Summary
I have taught elementary education as a classroom teacher for over twelve years in both public and private settings. I held a valid OH teacher's certificate in 1992 but did not need it here in CO as I taught in private schools, so it has lapsed.
I have maintained my own tutoring business over the last ten years and worked with students ages 5-14 (primarily 6-10) in subjects ranging from reading to math to study skills.
My MEd gave me excellent awareness and insight into learning styles and child development, and the years of teaching have afforded me excellent success as an educator and classroom manager. Montessori made me very aware of how to work with the whole child: mind, body and spirit.
Teaching Style
I consider myself to be an excellent communicator. I use humor and down-to-earth style to "connect" with children in a way that creates trust and allows them to open up.
I believe learning happens when students are encouraged to explore, ask, and dive into what interests them. When material is frustrating or challenging, it's my job to make the material accessible and interesting; to engage my student in a way that fosters that "aha!" moment.
Montessori gave me the wisdom to offer my students "freedom within limits". I can help children find their own boundaries by creating respectful learning situations where children realize they are being asked to do their best, and gently encouraged through positive feedback.
