Experience Summary
As a past high school teacher for 10 years at La Jolla Country Day School, I primarily taught 11th grade English (American literature) but also 9th grade and 12th grade (Advanced Placement--mostly European lit.) as well as semester electives like Expository Writing. Also, I was the literary magazine advisor for many years. All through college I tutored (e.g., at the Study Skills Dept. at SDSU)/taught (freshman Composition during grad. school). I truly enjoy helping students to write better, more confidently, and more readily and to read and understand literature more easily and adeptly.
Teaching Style
I believe in positive reinforcement and encouragement and individually-applied methods to students (especially of course in a tutorial setting). Also, I believe in modeling hard work, a love of learning, and the like. What I think is crucial as well is showing and giving students tools to write and read better--to show them it is not a mysterious gift they have or do not have but that they can work and improve and succeed.
