Experience Summary
While working as an engineer I discovered a passion for teaching and the joy of "sharing" knowledge with others. I am now semi-retired and would like to extend that passion by tutoring in science and mathematics on a part-time basis. I have three engineering degrees as well as teacher certification in secondary science and mathematics. I have taught in a high school and middle school, as well as at the community college level. I am proficient in all areas of mathematics and physical sciences that are offered at the secondary level, and my engineering experience has taught me how to apply these skills as well as communicate effectively in reports and other technical documents. Also, I often mentored younger engineers.
Teaching Style
I like to share my passion that comes from the pure enjoyment of understanding a subject and sharing this passion with my students. As an engineer I try to show the practical application of concepts, and from my interests in history and literature I try to provide an historical context to the development of the concept being taught. I believe in the innate ability of all students to learn, although of course not all learn at the same pace - I believe the key is to relate the subject matter to the student's life experiences and thus make the connection where learning is possible.
