Experience Summary
Since 1994, I have worked as a volunteer mentor/tutor teaching young African-American males about the importance of reading, writing, speaking and listening.
I have taught young men and women who started out either functionally illiterate, totally illiterate, and a few who were excellent readers, and destined for college and success.
My experience as tutor includes working as a volunteer (for 16+ years) at several prominent locations.
I am an avid reader of books, newspapers, and magazines.
Teaching Style
The first step is to determine the reading level of the student. Next, the student identifies all the words that they did not understand and learns how to use the dictionary. We then discuss what was read to work on the student's comprehension, listening, and speaking skills. By following this process, the student becomes comfortable and confident with their reading/speaking/listening skill-set.
To improve a student’s writing ability, I have him/her write about a recent personal experience. The student reads their own essay. I encouraged each student to visit a local library on a regular basis.
