Experience Summary
With two degrees in music, an MA (nearly complete) in British Literature, and fourteen years of experience working with children in summer camps or individually, I have an extensive educational background. Three years of study in England has added a unique perspective to my teaching palette. Since my music education took place at a university instead of a conservatory, I have a somewhat broader umbrella from which to teach music theory, history and aural training, as well as piano proficiency. My experience, however, is not only academic: a decade of performing as a union musician has given me practical knowledge that has proved invaluable in my teaching career.
Teaching Style
I believe that students learn when they have a genuine passion for the subject. As a teacher, I try to lead them to this passion before introducing anything technical or abstruse. My philosophy rests on the notion that students will actually guide their teacher once they are having fun; pedagogy is therefore a two-way street where true interaction is possible. Many of the barriers that might prevent a student from learning a particular subject include fear, intimidation, low self esteem and apprehension—all of which can be reversed if the student has a genuine interest.
