Experience Summary
I am in my first year of teaching 5th grade at Wyatt Edison Charter School in Denver’s Five Points neighborhood. The student population I serve is 75% Latino, 24% African American and 1% Caucasian. As a member of Teach for America, I receive intensive training in multiple areas of effective teaching strategies. I’ve taught summer school math, reading, and writing in Atlanta Public Schools to students who have failed the previous school year. I hold a current Colorado teaching license and received a degree in Political Science and Sociology from Howard University.
Teaching Style
I love children and have many tactile and visual learners in my 5th grade class; thus, I use a lot of movement, realia and manipulatives in order to appeal to those learners. Students who typically have this learning style respond well to mnemonic devices, thus I encourage and teach self-created songs and gestures to increase long-term memory. Additionally, in order to increase meta-cognition, the actualization of one’s ability to complete a task(s), I begin lessons with an investment plan which aims to increase interest and motivation.
